Got a good friend of mine that has a 2002 with some issues. It has a tendency to just die going down the road while it is in gear and just kicks back on. But twice in the past year it will not turn back on. It just misses a beat and kicks back on most the time.

Next thing, when it is cold in the morning the tach just dies and comes back on after a bit. While it was under warranty the dealership changed the ECM and PCM and they said it was fixed. He drove out of the parking lot and it did it again.

VP has been replaced and it has a juice with attitude.

Codes are 1694, 1693, 0501, and 1698

check APPS and maybe cam sensor...
What's he running for a fuel pump/ filters?

have him change out the camshaft position sensor. mines got the crank position sensor but it sounds like the same type of problems, and they're cheap. think i got mind for less than $50 bucks. on the 01-02 trucks i believe it is located behind and below the vp, unlike the 98.5-00 trucks where it is located behind the starter.

I'd take out the cam sensor to see if it's damaged. That is most likely the tach problem. The apps is a regular occurrence. That would cause the 'dead pedal' and cause the same problem you're describing.

We have changed the cam sensor within the past year and that didn't fix it.

Has he messed with any of the wiring under the dash?

I know when we swapped dashes between a SLT truck and a SLT plus truck, the body module went looking for information in the old dash and it could not find it (SLT plus truck with the SLT dash). The security system wouldn't let the truck start.

If he has boogered up some wires under there, he could have the occasional grounding problem and get the issues you are describing.

Second thought was the ignition cylinder, but only if he is losing everything (not just engine/tac)
