hey guys, i have a problem, i had a blown head gasket,we fixed that, and i was driving it today and it got really hot really fast! it started rattleing, and it lost power.when i git under the hood,it was smoking around the water pump,it was actually coming out of the case!any ideas,is the engine cooked????
 
when you refilled it with coolant did you bleed the majority of the air out of the system before driving it?
 
no i didn't, i've always had gasers and with most of them you don't have to.how do you do it,and what do you think my damage is????
 
it dont matter if it is gas or diesel, you always try to eleminate as much air as you can out of the cavaties of the engine. not sure of the damage you could encounter. i am sure there are things like a cracked block, cracked head, could have scorched your bearings.

Wow are you serious?? Dumba** You've got to bleed every motor out. That's bc of the thermostat.... Did you even know that their in gassers too?

So how did the headgasket blow?
 
You don't always have to vent, some gasser thermostats come with a small vent hole or bleed valve in them.

You will want to pull the head and get it checked, also look for scoring on the cylinder walls.

Well, I've done countless heads and cooling systems, and never done anything but put it together and fill it up with water and run it. Never had any problems, how do you bleed it, is there bleeders? And what wild be smoking inside the case and comin out around the pump shaft, or was it probably steam????
 
probably steam because there was no water in the head or block. my guess you should of noticed something was up when only a small amount of coolant went back into the motor. also if you expect to depend on a small vent near the thermostat you will be setting there for a while to bleed the air out.

my powerstrokes have vents too on their tstats. but i dont want to wait a half day for it to bleed. pull tstat, fill till it almost overflows and install tstat and finish. then idle warm up.



i went through some injector cups before. dunno if that was the reason but heat does damage things at not so hot temps.
 
where the arrow is there should be either a plug or a fitting with a small hose on it. remove it and then fill your radiator as you normally would til coolant comes out of there then put the fitting or plug back in. then as mentioned let the truck set and idle to operating temp to open the thermostat.

Should be a fitting there that has a valve in it that closes when the coolant reaches it. Bleeds the air out into the rad, and out the overflow bottle.

wasnt for sure lol i had an industrial one that just had a plug in it.
