GSK- Taming RPM

A few years ago I bought a 3K kit from PDR Diesel and a friend installed it in my '98 12v auto. It ran great but fueled harder and to a lot higher RPM than I liked (it acted more like a 4k kit, max power to at least 3700 RPM and would easily peg the tach).

I swapped out injection pumps and moved the spring kit over, but noticed it had 4 springs total counting the large outer idle spring and small inner spring. Doing a search it appeared I had a 4K kit, so wallah, take out the "extra" spring of the 4k to make it a 3K. But when I put the pedal to the floor it still pulls too high and heads right to 4000. Partial throttle is weaker and it starts to curtail above about 2900, but then that last 10% of pedal travel all of a sudden gives it more fuel and keeps it coming for almost another 1000 RPM.

Thoughts? I'm going to play with it in the morning and will take some pics of the springs that are in there.

So, what is the problem? Sounds good to me.... why would you not want it to do that? Put 60lb valve springs in it and give er hell.

Instead of pulling the small inner spring out try it with it back in and remove the middle spring. I liked that setup quite a bit for smooth throttle up to about 3400rpms.

Smokem posted up a loooong time ago about doing that and I decided to try it since my 4k's made the throttle very sensitive. It was as smooth as stock and pulled nicely through the RPM's IMO. I'm going to continue to run them this way after the truck's back on the road for the nice DD and towing it should provide.

Thanks for the great idea Muddin'dude, will give it a try. Something came up and I won't be able to get to it 'til at least Tues or Weds, but I'll report back how it turns out :)

OK today I finally got around to pulling the middle springs and putting the smaller ones back in. That did the trick! Gives full fueling right to 33-3400 and tachs out at 3600, which is perfect. Now I can bury the pedal and tach it out without creating the big 3500+ RPM smoke show. . .only a light haze now. I like keeping it clean as possible.

Drivability is excellent, only oddity is there is a noticeable dip in power between 26-2900 RPM. Maybe I grabbed the stock little springs, runs good for now though.
