I'm going to be sending parts and having an engine built next week by "Tidewater Machine" in the Virginia Beach area...before I do so I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with the shop? After searching around, and talking to builders he seems to be the most knowledgeable, and fair priced.

He'll be building a 5.9 Cummins for me with main studs, HD rod bolts, HD pushords, main studs, HD valve springs, and an aftermarket cam. He's going to send me the block, and head seperate, and I am then going to have the head machined for o rings, and install the head myself....Does anyone think I would run into any problems doing it this way?

Also, after talking with the builder he said he would strongly recommend I would "break in" the engine with stock components (injectors, turbo)before adding a bigger pump, injectors, twin turbos, etc...because if not the rings won't seat properly and I would end up with alot of blow by, oil out the breather, etc....? Is that common?

Thanks for any input...I'd like to know as much as possible before spending thousands of dollars...

does anyone know what pistons are best to use for my application?

The builder says I could use VIN D, VIN 6, or Marine pistons? And they should be matched to the spray pattern on my injectors?

Will shops know what spray pattern their injectors are, and what pistons should be used with them?

well the engine is already started being built at tidewater he's just waiting to hear from me on what pistons to use....

Can you even use marine pistons in a 24V?

If I am guessing right, I would say that 2 of those 3 pistons are for a 12v application. In 98 there were two VIN codes, D and 6. One was for the 12v, and one was for the 24v. And I'm guessing the marine application coincides with the 12v motor. I'm just guessing here, so I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

I gave you what option I would go with.

As for the Marine Piston issue, do you have marine injectors? if not, then you dont need marine pistons...

Doesn't really sound like he knows what he's building when it comes to a 5.9 cummins, what springs pushrods and cam is he using?

why does'nt it sound like he knows what hes building?

He's using a Hamilton Cam as well as their rods and springs...

I have'nt bought injectors yet....I have'nt seen any marine injectors for a 24V though? or else I would...

Would that be the better combo to go with? Marine pistons, and marine injectors?

Why dont you take it to Tim Barber at TRE Diesel? 757-831-7451 He is in Va Beach area. He knows his sh!t.

TRE DIESEL PERFORMANCE

+1 From what he told me, he doesn't charge much for engine builds either. Some of the parts he uses I've yet to hear about on these boards so he can probably get you what ever you need or tell you where to go.

and if it makes any difference to you, Tim WORKS for Cummins, so I would think that he would know a little bit more than tidewater...

Take it to Tim, and tell Tidewater that you just wanted someone with a little more knowledge about the engine to rebuild it.
