Well I finally got my new head into the machine shp today, and discovered a few things......

the head looks decent, and i havent gotten a chance to look it all over, til today. When I got it to the machine shop the first thing I noticed was that the head was machined......a LOT! and by a lot I mean it took a bit of the bottom of the intake off, not much at all, just enough to shine it up a bit. Story is, it had ruings cut in it, they wouldnt seat right and kept blowing out, so they were machined back out. Now its flat, but it has a bit taken off of it.

ampther thing we noticed is that the valves are not sunk in far enough. Exhaust are close, probably very close to stock specs. but the intake are right dead even. So looks like they are going to have to sink them down some. hopefully not a heck of a lot!

But we did look at the port and polish job and they did a pretty good job on that, so tha is a plus, one of a few.

first off we noticed that the intake and exhaust springs are different sizes. Exhaust springs look close to 2x the thickness of wire as the intake. Why is this? Just for greater seat pressure on the exhaust???

Also, we found a few bent valves. They are not bent much at all, just a little. Only one has a very slight contact make on it and it looks like it might be the only one that hit.

So since Im going to have to go with new guides. should i just spring for bronze guides? Or is there a better route.

Now we did decide that this head can be run as is, but truyth fully, I dont feel like testing my luck. So I might as well get a few good things done while its in there getting rings cut ( plus the machine shop is helping me out big time on price!!!)

Any thing else I need to look out for or consider?

if they have decked the head alot you need to make sure that you know the distance to make sure that you set the injectors up to spray in the bowl since decking the head would lower the injector into the bowl changing the spray into the bowl. in effect it is changing the timing of the engine

my head on my puller was decked .050 to clean up a crappy oring job. Has to countersink the valves and shim the springs to get the seat pressure right.

its been on there for 4 years.

Sounds like heavy duty exhaust springs were put in for an exhaust brake.

They didn't have those for 24v's...if someone changed the springs, they went to some aftermarket set, maybe only half a set?
