so i bought a spare head off a wrecked 01' cummins to build while still driving my 99' everyday. the head off the 01' is currently at the shop getting decked and cut for orings. i just have some questions:

what should be replaced when the head goes on the 99'?? (seats, seals, ect..)

is a valve job necessary??

will all the internals (rocker assembly, push rods, ect) work with the 99'??

what should be used to clean the "gunk" off the valves??

will the map sensor from a 99' thread into the 01' head, and what other sensors other than map, need to be swapped over to work with the 99??

thanks in advance

kyle

Valve seals should be replaced - cheap insurance against oil leaks.

Valve job is not necessary, but a good idea.

Should not have a problem with rocker assemblies or push rods.

Can't give you a definite answer on the MAP sensor, but I think it should work.

keep the suggestions coming please....a little explanation would help too

If you want to do any port and polishing or other machining, now is the time.

To be honest with you, you should check and see if it has pressed in seats. If so you for sure need to do something about that. I have already had one seat drop and a budy of mine has had 2 heads drop seats. I also kno of several people that have lost engines from a seat droping. Best thing to do is get oversized seats and press them in and then ahve them pinged in. The last head i got i was in a hurry to get my truck running and didnt do it. I have been very hope full it will hold until i get another one to send off.

Them map sensor should fit just fine. I think its just a different plug on the acutal sensor. But the newer sensor will use a differnet voltage or thats what i have been told.

Then i would for sure oring it and do some bowl work. The valve job will come with the oversized seats.

yea i have no idea what seats are in it...its a stock head that came off of a stock truck so i would assume whatever came stock on the heads in 01 is the type of seat it has

It just depends on where and who assymbled the head. It will either have cast seats or pressed in seats. Its easy to tell the pressed in seats have a copper look to them. I would also get the head pressure tested to make sure it doesnt have any cracks.

Definitly do a valve job! Normaly when a seat falls out its because the head is cracked at that seat. When the head cracks at the seat the seat loses its interferance fit. So have the shop make sure the head is not cracked especialy at the seats! Then if that all checks out ok see if they can remove the freeze plugs from the top of the head and thresd them for pipe plugs! This is cheap insurance for if You blow one of those plugs out it will fill the crankcase with coolant like has happened with other people on this site.

I am pritty sure there are not to many VP guys that have blown freeze plugs. Even if the head doesnt have cracks now doesnt mean a seat wont fall out. Running high egts will crack the head and then the seat will fall out. Your better off getting oversized seats in there.

there are 3 types of cummins owners. Those who dont have pressed in valves seats, those who have dropped a valve seat, and those who are going to drop a valves seat. Just give it time with heat it will happen.

can some one give me a ball park price range on a valve job and oversized seats

Freeze plugs in 24V heads are bad when they blow, antifreeze in the oil, and you may not know until you loose oil pressure.

What about the bowl work, whats all done to them.

"bowl work" refers to port work in the valve bowl area... this is typicly the most restrictive point in the entire intake and exhaust path... a quality valve job will also help flow, especially at low lift.

..........., and those who don't let egts get out of hand =P :shake:
I shouldn't talk because I don't think the ETH trucks have the best heads =\
