:bang A couple of my college buddies were workin on a 2000 24v in my shop tonight, installing some injectors and an airdog. Long story short the truck owners roommate left a rag in the intake manifold and bolted the intake horn back on. Truck was fired and backed out of the garage with the rag in the intake manifold. Idling rough as all get out before it dawned on the roommate that the rag was still in there. Needless to say the rag is now out of sight with the elbow removed. How should we go about finding and removing the rag/rag particles? The plan is to remove the injector lines and the plate that bolts over the top of the manifold, any pointers or suggestions would be appreciated. If we can't see anything then, we might have to pull the head. What we hope is that the rag just balled up before it got anywhere serious. Have any of you ever done such a thing? If so how did you go about fixing the problem.

sorry for the long read,
thanks in advance.

That should show the rag just by taking off the intake plate. I would pick up some right stuff to make a new gasket or get a new one in case the old one tears when you are removing the plate. I've never done it but I am sure that someone has.

Go to the local Cummins place and get the gasket, it's a thin paper type and only costs like $10??? Remember that the hold down bolts only go to 18ftlbs of torque, much past that and you will create a leak.

A local shop did the same thing to mine and it wraped around the valves and could not get it out. They had to remove the head and take the valves out.

hope it didnt do any damage i have seen a few that got stuck in the valves and the piston hit the valve, not good. hope it didnt happen to you guys

they were able to fish out the rag with a coat hanger the night after this happened. No damage! Clint is one lucky SOB!
