My dad has a 97 5sp 4x4. When to.start it the other day and nothen. Figured batterys was dead from setting a few weeks. Charged yhe batterys and it starts after running awhile killed it and tryd starting it again nothen.ok so we had batterys and alternator checked out all is good so took it to a local shop and they say tje ECM is bad not letting the alternator charge. So i just want a few other opipions on tje matter. Any thing will help

Sounds right but I never trust a shop. Test the Alt yourself to be sure. 12-14 volts at least. I believe it may be possible to ad an external regulator and avoid the ecm, it may be cheaper.

Well it may work. I'm pretty sure 97 has tcm built in for tranny control module. 3 harness instead of 2. But you may be able to use it I'm not really sure.

Wait I'm sorry I forgot it's a 5 speed. No tcm hookup. So it Could work but hopefully someone who knows for sure will chime in soon.

Did they hook it to a scan tool so you can see what the ECM reading shows? have you looked at the fuel shut off relay? I hear they can overheat and fail. ECM sounds $$$$... I'd get a 2nd and 3rd opinion on that kinda repair.

No sure if my dad seen the scaner or not. But ya a 2nd opinion i told him that would be best. Thanks guys for the help

Just have a external regulator put in, way cheaper than a ecm, we've done it with no problems.

ok so we installed a extrnal regulator to try to fix our problem we are having but now it shows that its charging the battery ay almost 20 volts on the gauge.
