I am working on a 1982 crew cab short box, that I was going to just put a nice 360ci. in, until recently when I bought a 2005 Quad cab with a cummins. I am now hooked on diesels. I have my 2005 built to put 400hp, and 733 torque to the ground, I would like to make my 1982 at least double that, or come very close. I am starting this thread to ask for suggestions on which block , head, internal parts, or accesories to use to get to these numbers. What machining, and what parts to use in this build. I have been reading forums from several web sites, and reading alot of information, and I was not getting very far, so I am asking for all of your help. The truck will be used for some towing, some everyday driving with the occasional dyno competition. Any help, or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. :thankyou2:

You should go with 96-97 manual 12 valves engine . The Ppump on those engine are 215 hp Ppump and 700 HP with those bad boys is very doable without benching the pump !

Thanks, for the ideas. blacksmoke83, what do you mean benching the pump? This is the first time I have done anything other than gas engines, so details would be great.

Blacklighting, I assume you mean a set of twins. What manufacturer, so that I can find the specs on those turbos, again new to all this. Trying to learn what all the numbers and letters in everybodies descriptions are so that I have a little better understanding of what everyone is talking about in the different forums.

Thank you both. Any body else have some ideas?

He means that all work can be done to it while still in the truck...Not having to pull the pump to do internal mods...Cams and such!!

2gen 12 valve is for sure the best and cheapest way to go for your project, believe me ! 12 valves is the way to go ! 2gen 24 valve and 3gen cummins engine are good to, but it's the hard way to go !!! I went through almost everything you can imagine with my 2gen 24 valve, that's why I'm Ppumped and I got a mexican engine block now !!!!!! Lot of $$$ and wasted time !

First with engine..I agree with the 96 (or so) 12v...ppump for sure. Make sure the engine internals are still good...bearings, pistons, what have you. You probly have a budget on this? If not....or needs good rebuild put good set of Mahle pistons in, stock rods lightened and balanced, maybe girdle plate, and what have you there. Put you a nice custom cut cam suited for your application (towing, racing, turbos, fueling, power adders, whatever) and possible roller lifters if you have money.
Next you must o-ring or fire ring the the block (or head), .020" over stock head gasket, and studs to seal compression. Head i would definitely have ported and valve work on that. At least the 60lb valve springs for high rpms. good flowing exh. manifold.
Turbos...s300/s400 good combo but anything close to that would work...but, depending on application, someone else will have to pipe in here as far as wastegates, housing sizes, etc to maximize spoolup and minimize top-end temps.
Fueling...ha injectors there is a ton but I would definitely go with a good extrude hone....Dynomite Diesel Performance Comp. Series heard good things about them .... with .022 or laser cut delivery valves, any aggressive fuel plate, and 4k governor spring kit. 18-24* timing. (I think that would get you 750 or 800 or so, but I might be a little off)

That should get a good start.........

Awww dreaming...That was kinda long but oh well. For good info on certain things start thread on certain parts.... i.e.- Best Fueling Setup for 800hp?; Good set of Pistons?; Good turbo setup for 800hp; Fire rings or O-rings? Cams? (well I don't know about that one you might not want to go there on here)

I think you get what I'm saying here.....you get more of the 'specialists' (for lack of better words) when individualize your threads

What do think of the dragon fly p pump and injectors. Think they are good for 800 hp. I have other things in mind too like a cam turbos etc.

What these guy's are saying about the 96-97 year engine is that it has a pump that will support 800hp without ever taking it off of the engine. You can add some parts to the pump like DV's, lines, a big set of injectors will get you to where you are wanting to go. The older 12valves are the easy way to make big numbers because they are the easiest to build its like a dang small block. Oh and you will really like the search function on this site as all of the guys here are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to anying diesel. Welcome to CompD

yes Sir...Welcome to CompD.

Yea....in the truck do exactly what sinfulcoin said...takin off the truck opens a whole new window of oppurtunity--money permitting. When you get into aftermarket pumps they come with balanced internals, custom ground cams that help with fueling on the top end and such, aftermarket governor springs and such, bigger plungers, barrels, and delivery valves, etc, etc

Thanks for all the great advise. This is a gas powered truck now, so I am glad for the help. I now know that for this build I need to locate a 96-97 engine. Since I will have the engine out of the truck, assuming the internals are good, are there any things that I should do that would make hitting my goal easier, or should I just make sure it is a good solid starting point for this build?
