High rpm surge. Low power.

Alrighy guys I'm at a loss. When I'm cruising at say 60 or so and lay into the throttle enough for it to come out of lockup I get this odd surge. Almost feels like a boost surge. The truck has no power whatsoever when this happens. I'm leaning towards a fueling issue because occasionally the truck will smoke considerably more when this happens. But it doesnt do it all the time. The engine is all stock except for injectors and a baby 57mm charger.

Is it possible that I have a dead/dying vp? I replaced the map sensor a few months ago in response to a code.

Any help is appreciated guys because I cant seem to figure out whats causing this.

its possible... id check the apps sensor first

it caused the same issues your describing in my 01
 
I was having similar fueling issues as well. Felt like there was nothing on the top end at all, and smoke was pretty erratic at lower rpms. Was also having hot start issues. Turned out to be a bad pump. So it's possible...
