im tired of all the tranny shops around here never had any luck with the guy around here so i decided i just going to build one myself. since mine just went out looks like im doing it this weekend. i have done manuals but never messed with a auto. what tools do i need whats some tricks to doing this i got a book on them.whose done theirs on here?

I did mine in a weekend the first time, only special tool is you! And a press for the OD unit. Take your time, take pictures, take more pictures.

It's not that hard at all as long as you are mechanically inclined. about 2 days, first day let the clutch packs sit in oil over night and then assemble the next day..You do need a piston compressor for the tranny about 100 at the most I think and you can get a torque flite manual for like 40 or so bucks which has the assembly and disassembly.

we used a piece of pipe with a window cut in it to pop the clip off the od section. the rest was fairly straight forward. mike

That's how I've done them too.

All the tools you realistically need to build one of these trannys can be made at home, provided you have some fabrication skills, tools, and some spare material.

The ATSG manual is only ~$15 and is basically a copy of the FSM. Buy one or the other.

Rebuilding a transmission isn't hard, but figuring out the tricks, modifications, and weak points of the tranny is what will separate a home built tranny from one that a good performance shop builds. That knowledge and experience, IMHO, is why the big shops charge what they charge. Also, if you actually break down how much the materials will cost to replicate their trannys you will find that their labor is pretty reasonable.

Good luck.

they are ultra simple tramsmissions, takes me about 2 hours to go through one if i be careful.

pretty easy you can do it with mostly hand tools and a press take your time on disassembly and try to lay out parts in the order they came out. when you get it all put together air apply the clutches with compressed air. If you do a VB its easier to get one from HTS and Id get the rigid band, billet accumulator,

Rigid band can have some of its own issues.

Yes true because it doesnt flex. Ive broke the end off a flexible band. Ive a had good luck with rigid bands

Where do you purchase these manuals? Prob need to pick one up since I'll probably need a billet input on down the line.

dont want to hijack anyones thread, ive done powershift trannys in loaders and dozers i wonder how simaler they are.

pretty close you would be surprised at how similiar they are on the inside. I worked at CSI (where the CSI Dodge drag truck is from) which does heavy equipment and although I didnt personally build any loader trannies or dozer trannies they look similiar.

I just put my trans together myself this weekend and i have no forward gears reverse works like a charm but no forward for me and iideas guys.......

It is the forward clutches or the overruning clutch in the back of the trans. Do you have manual low?

whats your clutch pack clearances?? whats band adjustments? get those right providing you have a good valve body and shifter cable you should go forward

I have manual low but it slips under full power im leaniong towards the overrun clutch is it possible to put in backwards???? the clutch packs and bands are all good
