How do you get soot out of a air filter?

i had a little exhaust leak and now im trying to get the afe clean.

i ve soaked it 3 times and it turns the water black every time:bang

should i do this it till doesnt turn the water black or just use it?

i had to use castrol super clean in a 5 gal bucket about 5 times before mine came clean. after a bad exhaust leak in the engine compartment

thats what mine looks like. im just using dish soap. thats what afe recommended or simple green, which i need to try.
