how similar is the 6.0 tranny to the allison?

as far as make up and internal desing, does anyone have experiance with both of these trannys? and if so, how similar are they?
i am just curious, cause right now we are learning about the allison in class and we are curently ripping them apart and re-assembeling them. was just curious if i could get away with ripping the ford tranny apart and do some modifications myself, like upgraded clutch packs and what not.
i remember hearing somewhere that they were almost identical....is this a fact?

I'm not sure but I think the allison has a valve body but the torqshift doesn't.
