On ebay i saw you can get a new hx40 for like $300. Is this a good upgrade from stock? Will i get better mileage out of it? How much of a power increase roughly on an 01 24v? will it lower my egts?

The only HX40 I would consider using is the 60mm version... and chances are, if they are $300 on Ebay they are the Chinese ones. A new 60mm HX40 would probably be about $5-600 I would guess. And for us to guess if it will lower your EGT's, you would have to tell us what they are first, lol. As far as power, we need to know your mods too... And HX40 on a stock truck will be just laggy with no power gains. Throw some injectors or a box and then we're talkin'!

Always look for HOLSET cast in the compressor housing if you want a genuine HX40. Avoid the imposters.

Well I have the quad adrenaline with the pulse and a smarty tuner, fass150, 4" straight pipe, afe intake and probably going to buy a set of stage 3 jammers. The turbo on ebay has a 56.6 Ind., Exd 74.6

Can anyone give me some info about this turbo, or even a standard holset hx40?

You can take post #3 to the bank...as far as purchasing an HX40, watch the classifieds here or contact one of the many top quality supporting vendors.

Is a holset hx40 a good upgrade for my mods? Do you think it would hurt my mpg or gain some?

Having run a 60mm HX40 for a couple years with a few wire-tap boxes and injectors than ran from 60hp to 240hp I would say that particular HX40 wouldn't be a good upgrade. The 56mm inducer really isn't going to give you much more air than your stock HX35. An s300g would be better, but even then its still a 57mm turbo. At a minimum you should look for a 60mm HX40, but beware, the larger wheel can make them prone to snapping the shaft if you bark it to hard since its the same shaft as your HX35. Something in the 62/68/14 would probably make you happiest, but expect to pay at least $900-$1000 bucks for a good used one.

You could save some money and retrofit an He351 from a third gen on there... It has the same size 60mm inducer as the good HX40, but is more robust. The stock exhaust housing can be a bit restrictive on the topend, but it can be ported some to make up for it. A good used one can be had for $3-400 bucks if you shop carefully. Watch out for ones with the aluminum compressor housing turning brownish where it touches the center section though. In the ones I've seen, its a sign the previous owner ran it pretty hot and the heat leeched into the compressor side. While it still might be in good shape now, the bearings might have a shorter life.

For the price, the He351 is a good option. I almost went that route myself before I went hog wild with my p-pump swap LOL

Hey thank you for your help! all of this info has been very helpful for me

I'll let the dyno numbers do the talking.............

Had a PDR HX40 on my '97. Put down 363hp/793tq.

Switched to the HTT Killer B2 64/14 (NO other changes), I put down 416hp/892tq.

I ran the 40 with stock injectors for a while. Only had the 10 plate as the only fueling mod at the time. I was drivable, and smokey. But, the turbo change alone netted a solid 1mpg gain, vs stock! :D

The HTT cut my smoke in half, and no more EGT issues. The HX40s (60/16W) are a decent upgrade, but far from the best.
