HX40 compressor housing/wheel swap questions

My HX40 is a 58mm compressor wheel.

I have found a good used 6 blade 60mm wheel and housing locally for a really good price.

My question is, will the machined area on the center section on the compressor side of my turbo that the compressor wheel sits back into slightly be large enough for the 60mm wheel?

I can pull the compressor housing off and look, but i thought someone may know.

Also, if that is good to go, then im assuming i can just take the old wheel off, and stick the new one on and be good to go with no balancing, etc? Since im pretty sure the HTT 60mm upgrade kits for HX35's dont need balanced, and this would essentially be the same thing.

If you swap the compressor wheel, you need to rebalance. It might work without rebalance but, your turbo will not last as long as it's suppose to.

For the compressor housing, I don't think that the 58mm housing will fit over a 60mm wheel, try it, youll see if it fit ! Average clearance between housing and wheel is 0.005" to 0.007"

Good luck !:Cheer:

I have the 60mm housing to go with the 60mm wheel, but there is a recess machined into the center section that the wheel kind of sits back in, and im not sure if the one on my turbo is big enough for the 60mm wheel or not. I think they call the piece that is machined for the wheel to fit into the backplate.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks a lot for the link.

I had forgotten that the backing plate came off of the turbo. I can get the backing plate with this stuff for a steal.

It looks like i can put the wheel on in any spot without the need for balancing, so I think I will be in good shape!

Cant wait to get this done and see if there is any difference.

Your fine with the balance they are zero balanced , just have the backing plate machined. It will take the guy longer to set it up in the lathe then it will to make the recess.

I can just unbolt the stock backing plate and bolt the new one on though.

At first, I was thinking i couldnt do that, but now that i read up on it some, I see that i can just swap the 60mm backing plate right onto mine with no problems too.

Thanks

Eric

Im sorry had a "Corky" moment...lol I was thinking you had a hx35, my bad I didnt see that you had a 40. Yes swap the backing plates... lol

No problem. haha

Yeah, i wasnt thinking i could just swap the back plates and then i did some reading and remembered i could just do that. He has the backplate for it, so It should be a quick swap. I may go and get it from the guy tomorrow. I definately want to get it from him.

Its pretty much all the same, so no big deal. I got the info that i needed, so thanks again!

Alright, well, Im back where i started now.

I got the entire HX40 that i was going to use the comp housing and stuff off of tonight. But, the backplate doesent unbolt from the center section like i thought it did. Maybe that is only on the WH1C turbo's? Anyways, neither mine, or the HX40 i just got have a detatchable backplate.

So, now im still wondering if my 58mm hx40 has a large enough recessed area on the backplate for the 60mm wheel to fit into it. If not, I will either have to swap center sections, have mine machined, or just leave it how it is.

I guess i may pull the compressor cover off tomorrow and see if i think the backplates recess is large enough or not.

Eric

Well, I pulled the compressor cover off of my turbo today.

The backplate is machined to fit the 58mm wheel perfectly. The 60mm wouldnt fit in there, so looks like I wont be putting it on my current turbo.

I got the whole HX40 with 16cm Exhaust housing from the guy. A valve went though it and the shaft is slightly bent and the exhaust wheel is destroyed.

The center section, compressor wheel/housing, and exhaust housing is still good though, so I could rebuild it as a 60mm HX40 with a new shaft, and rebuild kit, put it on my truck, and sell my turbo.

Or I also have an HX35 that would be in great shape if i rebuilt it. I could have it machined to run the 60mm wheel since i could take my time doing it, and I could run it as a hybrid with either a ported 12cm, 16cm, or 18.5cm exhaust housing, and I could pull work stock. I just hate to go back to a 3 inch downpipe and outlet though.

Well, at least i have the parts, just have to decide what to do with it all:hehe:
