Found a rebuilt one pretty cheap and was wondering if this would be a cheap alternative to a phat shaft turbo or something. Just want to move some more air than my stock turbo to get my egts down or should i just save up for a phat shaft? Would be going on the truck in my sig. Thanks

Hard to say without knowing the specs. But we put a HX55 on my brothers 12v. With 370's, #4 plate, afc modded, and 22* timing, it would never spool. Even up to 80mph, still only 10psi. Literally would never spool.

Your talking about a slightly smaller turbo though, and you should have more fuel than his 12v, so it might work.

I think you will love it if you have a 17 turbine housing, it would spool alright. If its a 19 it would be kinda slow, and anything bigger than that...useless!

17's are fun!!!

HX50s and 55s are known for weak shafts and compressor wheels also.

Like Delinquent said .. if you have a smaller exhaust housing it shouldn't be too hard to light if you have a decent amount of fuel. It will be easier to light on your truck than on a 12v.

The HX50 HX52 & HX55 chargers all have the same size shaft and it's larger than the s300 shaft. I don't think the shaft is going to fail very easily. The 50 has a smaller compressor wheel than the 55 and both come with too large of turbine housings(17cm-25cm). The 52 makes a very good upgrade because it has a 69mm turbine in a 16cm housing (giving it decent drive) and come with either a 67mm or 71mm compressor wheel depending on which one you find. I personally have found the 52 to work very well on my CR with a Haisley street/towing cam and 90hp sticks which netted me 60-65 lb. boost.

It's not the shaft that's weak on the hx50's, imo. The compressor cover is thinner than it should be and warps, causing the compressor wheel to contact the housing.

The back of the cover or the whole thing? I haven't heard this before...
