IAT fooler... What have you used??

do you mean for cold weather operation (potentiometer) ? ?

check this out. : http://www.hurricane-horsepower.com/

don't know how to install but there was a write up on DTR a couple years ago that worked for a guy up north. something to do with the cold weather timing surge on the vp trucks.

I did. I just unplugged the IAT whenever it was cold on my 12v.

So with the IAT sensor unplugged, the computer will kick in high idle automatically??

How hard would it be to wire in this system??

Operation
Cold Engine Start (Coolant <140°F - Outside Temp > 32*F)

Turn on the IAT fooler and select normal high idle. Now start your engine. With in about 2 minutes the high idle should start. Once the high idle starts turn off the IAT fooler and allow the ECM to monitor the IAT temperatures. As the engine warms up to 170°F it will cancel on its own and idle normally from that point on.
Cold Engine Start (Coolant <140°F - Outside Temp < 32*F)

Turn on the IAT fooler and select 3 cylinder high idle. Now start your engine. With in about 2 minutes the high idle should start once it get to 1,200 PRM's the 3 cylinder mode with begin. Once the high idle starts turn off the IAT fooler and allow the ECM to monitor the IAT temperatures. As the engine warms up to 170°F it will cancel on its own and idle normally from that point on.
Warm Engine Start (Coolant 140°F-170°F)

You can start the high software with a warm engine. At this point you need to use both the ECT fooler and IAT fooler. Select the proper high idle mode for your weather conditions as in cold start procedure. Once the high idle starts turn off the IAT & ECT foolers and allow the ECM to monitor both ECT & IAT temperatures. As the engine warms up to 170°F it will cancel on its own and idle normally from that point on.
Forced High Idle

Turn on both ECT fooler and IAT fooler have it set for normal high idle. Start the engine and allow the high idle to start. Once the high idle starts turn off the IAT fooler but leave the ECT fooler on. This will allow a forced high idle that never ends. To cancel it just turn off the ECT fooler and it will cancel.

WARNING: In this mode of operation the ECT sensor is completely disabled. There is no way of monitoring engine temperatures. Becareful and alert to changes in the engine at this point. If you have a exhaust brake DO NOT activate it in this mode.
Enhanced Warm Up

If you have a exhaust brake you can use it will both 3 cylinder high idle and normal high idle. But be sure to turn off the ECT fooler when the high idle begins this will allow for normal cancellation. This will push the EGT temps up to about 800-850°F and warm the engine rapidly in under 10 minutes you should have 170°F of coolant temperature.

Why the hell would you need the 3cyl high idle function when its almost 70*'s out? Seems like all that guy did was use a potentiometer to fool the ECM into thinking that the intake air temp was below what ever value (degree F*) the Smarty uses to engage the 3cyl high idle. Seems pretty pointless to me. I would just let the Smarty do its thing and use the potentiometer to control surge issues when its actually cold out.:bang

I would like to engage the 3 cylinder high idle when its 20-30* out so I can start my truck 5min. before leaving for work and have a relatively warm truck instead of idling it 20min each morning.

Yeah, thats a given. I only used a smarty once and it left the High Idle program in my truck. I just dont see the sense in using the POT. mod to fool the ecm like the guy in that video did. Its gonna come on when its cold out anyways.

But only when its 20deg or so below...Personal preferance

my truck needs to see 30* at the IAT sensor to go to high idle and 15* to go to 3 cylinder.

Awhile back i found the temp. "specs"(according to Ohms-+ at a certain degree) on the IAT sensors but now can seem to find it:bang

Thats make sence??:what:

Is there anyway to hook up a simple high idle switch without worrying about the 3cyl. function? If that would be a simple wire tab I would be happy with that.

P.M. Got Torque on here (the guy with cummins/excursion and p-pumped 24v) about the switch to kick in high idle/3cyl.

"Bnold" on this site and DTR has all the info about the manual high idle that taps into the APPS.

The smarty activates the high idle feature that is supposed to be an enabled function that comes from the factory. When the smarty reflashes your computer, it enables that function.
