I'm thinking of pulling at the local fair and have a few questions. I just put in a new 13" valair ceramic button clutch. It's pretty grabby and I was wondering what gear and what RPM's to launch at? Any other tips would put appreciated. THANKS

trying to help you out here, i'm an auto person, never heard of your type clutch, What I see most standard people do is kinda ride the clutch out a way's. you can't just rev and dump you'll either snub or break. try 3rd as i don't see any real extra fuel added here.

thats a for sure way to burn that single plate ceramic up, it is not made to be slipped. and not made for sled pulling, but dual disc's have some slip built in.

Deerefan-I think you should try 3rd gear-low range. Don't get crazy with your rpms, just give it enough to bring it out of the hole until you know the clutch isn't slipping then bury the pedal. I'm running valair's ceramic/kevlar and am anxious to test it out-only got bout 100 miles on it so its not finished breaking in yet. The gist of what the guys at valair told me was to take it easy and just let it out like towing a trailer-when you feel it fully engauged then let er rip. It kinda sucks but that's the way it is with the type of clutches we have. They don't like to slip and too much slipping will tear them up fast. If I had the money, I woulda went dual disk but..........

3rd low launch at 4000rpm, by the time your clutch engages you'll probably be around 3500rpm. slip the clutch until you have either one rotation of the tires or about 5ft them drop the clutch and mash the pedal to the floor. i would be nervous about pulling without suspension blocks, weight bracket and no traction bars.

Halerazor---you can do that with a ceramic or ceramic/kevlar single disk clutch-and not burn it up on the spot? What about drive train shockloading?

i didn't say it wouldn't hurt it you would probably break the input shaft before you smoked the clutch. if your just wanting to pul and have funl and are worried about breaking put it in 2nd low you probably wont break, but your deffinitely not gonna win.

Trying to be competetive while using the clutch that my budget dictated. I may just have to come off the line soft in 3rd low like I have been. What about 1500rpms and almost dumping the clutch?

I think i'll experiment with a trailer in the dirt to see what i feel comfortable with since i'm in the single disk crowd. How heavy are sleds? Would an empty gooseneck be close enough?

I can always find a load if i need to.

I would say rev it to about 1800-2000 slip it just a touch to build about about 5 psi, and then let it all the way out.

SIde note I saw a guy the other day rev it to redline, and side step his stock clutch, the tires broke loose, and he had a good hook. He was running 265 or 285 at, nothing really agressive.

Sleds are anywhere from 25-40K

what would you guys recommend for a 6spd, 265tires, and 3.55 gears? I've got a SB 3600 DD getting installed in a couple weeks. I'd like to try sled pulling for my first time this summer.

3rd or 4th low with a 6speed and redline it since you have a vp44, don't even ask about egt's i was over 1600* before i even got to the 100ft mark

Z----so is it like starting a trailer weighing 25-40k or is that the weight with the box up putting the drag on?

Exactly what I was gonna say. I burnt up a LUK cerametallic pro gold trying to launch at 15psi. I did get 293ft for 3rd place with that single disc. I limped it home & threw a DD in.

I practiced in the back field before my first pull. I got a chain & hooked up to my Ford 9000 & locked the airbrakes. I pulled it 300' then started up a hill behind my house about 50' before coming to a stop. It was practice, but nothing like the real thing. When you feel that sled behind you, it is like trying to pull down a tree. Very heavy.

3rd gear with the ceramic adjust your mirrors so you can see the rear tires let out the clutch just like you do when your drive hard and once you see the rear tires start to move dump it and put it to the floor.

i pulled 3 times on the ceramic and its still in my truck and would be running it longer but i will be getting a DD very soon :) from valair
