Ok guys im having problems and need some advice. So a couple weeks ago my throttle got a real stiff spot in it toget it off idle. then once you get past that spot its just fine, except when you start it (have to give it a little pedal to start). when it starts and I drop the throttle it kind of hangs and idles down slow then after that its fine. Then it went away for a couple days till i was cruising on the highway got on it a little and it stuck at 2700rpm's so started pumping the peddle and it idled down then died, and then wouldnt stay running, let it sit for a minute then it started just like nothing happened. And has been fine till lastnight, drove it all day then it set for an hour went to restart and it had the stiff spot back, so started it and it hung for a moment then died, restarted it and it was loping really bad then died again. Waited a minute restarted and it was totally fine! The only problem I know of is its barely leaking a little oil from the govern housing on the back of the pump. Any idea's on what is going on? Thanks!

Well, hello there Gary! Welcome to CompD.

I would suggest checking your throttle cable for fraying, make sure the shut-off solenoid is pulling all the way up and staying there, lube and check the heim joints on the throttle linkage.

Right after it did it the first time lastnight i checked the shutoff lever (i have a kill cable) and it was good. I can understand it sticking if the cable is messed up but what has me stumped is the loping and randomly wont run?

Those model year pumps are famous for failing internally when they get hot. The next time it starts malfunctioning try pouring some cold water over it (yes I am serious). If the engine smooths out you need a rebuild or a new pump.

Hi back at ya Scott.

Ok guys, would like some more advice. The truck has been running great since the last post here. Until on my way to scheid, 2 hours into the trip it did what i described in my first post. pulled over got it to fire took off, ran fine till an hour later let off the throttle to get off a exit and it died, it would restart spit, sputter, and fuel knock real bad, then clear out and free rev to 3k+ and stick there for a couple seconds then start dieing and as it was dieing sounded like it was eating its self alive! did this atleast ten times toget off the exit to park it. Loaded it up that night with zero problems, got it home runs drives perfect! cant get it to act up at all! whats goimg on?

Also now, one minute it will roll just jet black smoke and the next it will be light gray?

no, i was sitting on the side of the highway Lol it never happens at a convienant time, so i can experment with trying to fix it!

Do you have air getting into the system on the suction side of the lift pump? Might be worth putting a clear filter or sight glass in there to get a look. Also whats your fuel level at when this happens? Might be best to try to keep the tank full up for awhile to eliminate that idea. Though really it sounds like something weird going on with the pump internals. Especially the sticky spot in the throttle travel.
Good news is you can probably get a decent used 160 for cheap.. most folks want the 215 or 180 pumps.

Your pump is bad. I had a '95 that acted the same way. Something to do with the plungers and barrels I was told. You need to replace or rebuild it. Whatever you do don't buy the cheapest rebuilt one you find.

My filters could use changing so there on order. i'll try the sight glass. and it has happened at both 1/4 and 3/4's tank.

And when this happens the throttle and kill cable do nothing their totally dead! Im pretty much sertain i need a pump.

^^^

What he said. Sounds like your barrel/plungers are worn enough that they have a spot that hangs up. The problem only shows up once the pump is good and warm or you lug the engine (like at a stoplight).

Yes it sounds like that the rack is hanging up, I had a 94 do this exact same thing then on my way to a doctors apt the SOB went WOT and pegged at about 3800rs and I almost didnt get it shut down. The pump shop told me that the barrels and plungers were scored bad, the reason why it was hanging up the way it did, just like the fellow members have stated. You my friend need a new pump

Ok, thanks guys! atleast now i know im in the market for a pump. Which sucks! lol

You may not need a new pump, if they aren't too bad they can be lightly lapped to get everything freed up and that would buy you another 35-40,000 miles of use

Lets say this was the case, how much does that normally run? Ive got a friend with a virgin 175 that i could get decently reasonably, but dont really know the shape its in either. Im not in a huge hurry because its not my only vehicle, so im just checking all options.
