Ok whats the best way to do this? I've put a 24mm socket over them and tapped on them with a rubber mallet and they do nothing. So I hit harder and they bust the metal seats right off.

here is one I busted...

These are the ones that came with my top end gasket kit. I had used my engine serial number to insure I got the correct gaskets. Looks like these don't fit. I've tried a couple things that I read on here and busted one each time.

What year of truck? The CR heads have the tophat style and the older engines use the other style you posted. Also intake and exhaust are diffrent seals.

Those style seals are designed for new valve rotators, as Cummin's calls them. They won't fit over the valve guide, basically. There are the old style seals that fit over, that aren't held on by the springs like these. If your old seals were orange and black, use P/N 3921640. Thanks to Snedge for the number.

I ran into the same issue when I ordered my top end kit. Sadly, I can't exchange the new ones for some sort of credit for the old style seals. So now I have 12 new seals I can't do anything with.

its a 98 12V

So the first photo that I posted was a CR tophat style? and the link with the photo was the correct one?

How can I tell the difference between intake and exhaust ones?

I ordered a set from Advanced auto & napa. Both looked different on the screen but neither had different part numbers for intake and exhaust...just a set of 12 idential ones.

I am not sure about the 12V's, but as far as I know in 03 they switched to the tophat style.

I got mine from Cummins and there were two diffrent part #'s and one was green and the other was yellow. I believe green was exhaust and yellow was intake but I am not positive anymore.

I am sure Tate will be able to help you out more.

I bought the same upper engine gasket set for my 12 valve and have the same seals as you and they won't work on my 12 valve. My headgasket also has MADE IN CHINA stamped in the headgasket!! I hope yours was made somewhere else. What I have is a genuine Cummins gasket set and the valve seals are useless and the H.G. is made in China and I'm out $245. I'm not a happy camper!! Mike

Despite the made in china im not happy that they include gaskets that are not for my model. apparently they sent me gaskets that are used in a commonrail.

My last made in china gasket was letting compression into my coolant system...when I took the head off there was NO signs of a blow out anywhere. But while running I had comression bubbles in the coolant overflow tank.

How about a Fel-Pro headgasket? Anybody have any luck with those or do we need to search out the Cummins H.G. thats not made in China.

proper style:

They aren't for a CR, just new style 12v seals. Sadly, there is more parts needed to make them work. Use the P/N in my first post for the right seals like wat Signal 73 posted a pic of.

I got the orange ones yesterday. They work great!

Thanks guys.

FYI after installing the orange ones I had 2 lift up on me. Just when I thought it looked like a foolproof job:doh: I cleaned the offending posts that the seals sit on, reseated the seals and so far so good (I think):bang

I had a keeper about my my face its permanent home! valve spring compressor tool slipped off while compressed all the way down...ouch!
