by now i have broken two "cheap" pullers and broken a bolt off in the gear. all the research i have done says that the gear retaining nut on the end of the shaft is the only thing that holds the gear on. they keep saying just crank the puller down tight and smack the puller bolt with a hammer till she pops off. Is this correct or am i fixin to break something doing that? what about a little bit of heat on the gear itself mabey?

I use a cheap steering wheel puller and tighten it down and tap the bolt and it comes off. If you heat it up I wouldn't let it get very hot, you don't want to cook anything in the IP

^^^This. A cheap puller will have cheap bolts. The bolts bend and cock and wont apply the power even. I dont have that tool but I have a big snapon puller set that I use.

If you have a good amount of pressure pulling the gear a couple taps on the shaft should pop it right off
