Anyone Daily drive a Iron Giant? I am getting a Iron Giant with 3850 pressure plate [custom order] & I'll be towing heavy & DD this truck. I'm just wondering if anyone has one on a DD/tow rig/ sled puller?

You will where that clutch out faster than a lower plate press clutch. Everytime you engage and disengage that clutch it will where out the friction material that much quicker. Its not intended to go in out all the time like it would in a DD. Lower plateload pressure clutch will last longer in a DD

I don't buy that. If you slip it you slip it, if you don't you don't.

Is it a diaphram or 4 prong plate? If its not a diaphram it wont last long dd ing been there done that with 3850s. You should have a 3250 dia.

Thats how peter explained it to me. If you DD a truck and trailer with a 4200, engage and disengage the clutch multiple times throughout the day, You'll eat up a lot of friction material because of the plate load pressure. A 3600 will last much longer in a DD

Finger style plate I believe. Peter shipped it on Thursday & it will be here tomorrow. I had a 3250, 3600 & 3850 all melt down on me. I'm done with the spring loaded pressure plates.

So you have Iron Giant discs with a 3850 pressure plate?

I'm confused with your last sentence also.

how can you have an "iron giant" with a 3850 plate load...thats nothing more than a 3850 12fb which he's been selling for years.

the iron giant refers to a 4200 PP with iron or feramic material

all i know is that i daily drove, drag raced, sled pulled, and boost launched a SBC DD 3850 12 CB for 30,000 miles with zero issues, except that 3 of the fingers broke and it wouldn't disengage.. I asked peter if they were going to do anything to fix this in the future, and he said, 'Well we don't recommend these for daily driving, so no..." He doesn't like the lever (borg and beck type) pressure plates to be daily driven, because the fingers break.. it has nothing to do with the friction material.. I got 1,500 miles on this one so far, I'll let you know how i make out..

Yes X2.. The 'ORIGINAL' Iron giant is just a 4200lb plate load DD with 12 Feramic buttons per side of disc..

Yep. Peter said the 3850 plate will keep it streetable & he switched me to the Rigid discs because I kept melting the rubber plugs out of the discs.

Dunno? Drew referred to it as a Iron Giant 3850 plate load.

go tripple!!!! My buddy DD's his SBC tripple disk and sled pulls every weekend with it, and it's smoother than any dual disk he's had in that transmission

I'll second the triple disk. I've driven my boss's several times with the dual and triple and the triple is smoother, quieter, and easier to shift than any of his dual's.

As soon as my rich aunt gets out of the poor house, I'll try triples.:hehe:

The Iron Giant mainly refers to the friction material. The plate load does not matter, 3850-4200. And for the record, we no longer use the feramic buttons on the Iron Giant clutches, we have switched to using the 5135 full lining feramic/sintered iron slipper discs in all our DD and DDD clutches. This has reduced the heat and increased the longevity as well as rectified any dics warp.

Peter

Ok thanks for clearing that up Peter.

When did you change to the full lining, I got my 4200 IG back in March and it was the feramic buttons. Maybe this winter Ill go to the full lining discs.

Thanks for clearing that up Peter. I got it today, heading out now to install the clutch. I'll have the tranny in tomorrow & I'll let ya know how it works out.

Have the tranny in tomorrow? Wtf is up with that? Get under there and get it done NOW. Not tomorrow, not later, NOW. I swear some people are so lazy. LOL
