Is the VP44 as bad as everyone says?

Define "Mild"?

But no it's not that bad to achieve 500-600hp or less,

i would say 500hp would be plenty for me. just want a quick tow rig and daily driver

Alot of guys complain about the vp44 because they can fail unexpectedly. My stocker lasted 100k miles & I've got over 70k on this pump tapped since installed. Anything can fail at any given time, no matter what we are talking about. Like anything else, luck of the draw.

I am still running my factory VP, it has 133,000 on it and its been tapped since about 80,000.

The VP really isnt that bad. As others said, a good fuel supply is very important. My factory VP lived till 160k, although it was only tapped for 10k or so. But it still ran when I removed it, just getting weak I thought. I gave that pump to a guy and it was still runnin on another truck last I knew.

What do you want to do?

My only complaint is after 600HP you don't have much option. Its been reliable for me.

Dude your stock intack horn is holdin you back big time. Or says Banks god know they are right!!!!!!

i would probably say that if i wanted more than 5 or 600 i would just p pump it.

well until these monster/dragon pumps prove reliable I'm going to stick with the SO pump since I put 40K+ miles a year on. I can't afford a new pump every yr. A P-pump at 700-800HP is not going to be half a smooth and streetable as my current setup.

so whats the highest amount of power i could get out of one of these and still be reliable?

it's pretty rare that a p-pump will fail... when/if it does, it'll usually let you limp your way to wherever you need to be... even if it's 1000 miles away

My 1st pump just quit starting. No Check Engine light, missing , sputtering...nuthin'. A shot of ether and it started right up and ran normally. Didn't run any slower up the test hill. I figured either an electronic doodad inside the pump let go or it couldn't push enough fuel while cranking over with the starter.
After installing a rebuilt SO pump and priming the lines & injector fittings, it started right up. Runs just fine.

They all have goods/bads. I think the vp is seriously underated. My truck has been problem free.
