Ok so i have it torn down to the piont of holding the lifters up and pulling the cam out of it. My question is i have spoke with a a couple people who say to use dowel rod to hold the lifters up:what:? How does this work ? ANy pictures?
IS there a differnt way of doing this? Sorry for all the questions, it is my first time this far into a cummins.

BY the way the engine is still in the truck, but i have the front clip pulled of it.

Thanks again

take 12 dowel rods, I forget what size, maybe 1/2 inch, and sand one emd to a point, you then jam these into the tappets and lift up on them gently, tie them up using a zip tie, and when you're done just pull the dowel rod out.

What he said. I don't remember the diameter needed, but make the dowls at least 6" longer than the pushrods.

If you wanted to take the pump off you could remove the tappet cover and use hose clamps or zip-ties to hold them up. But thats a lot of work.

Well that what i was thinking, i already have the pump off the engine and tappet cover off, i couldnt see why you could not use zip ties or hose clamps.

NOw it makes more sense why everybody was useing dowel rods, so you can go though the push rod hole and hold the lifters up with out taking the pump and side plate off. :bang

404 deere engines are set up much the same way other than there is no lifter access cover... We use cow magnets brazed to the end of coat hangers and cloths pins :P

Always great to learn there's an easier way to do something after you've already done all the work to do it the hard way :hehe:

Look at it this way; perfect time for an aftermarket cam :Cheer:

I was thinking the same thing, but unless i can find a good used cam, im not going to beable to afford it on the laid off budget im working with.

The link in my sig has pics of the dowels I used. Starts off as 1/2", I think they were about 12" long.

Turning it upside down, however, would still let you avoid the dowel rods.

A piece of 1 1/2" PVC pipe will keep them up after you have the cam out too.

Thanks everybody, i got the cam out tonight and the new parts should be here tommorrow
