Bought an engine for a swap and pulled the cover to see if the dowel pin had been fixed found it at the bottom of the case. It got chewed up but no damage i can see to any of the gears. It did do a little damage to the case itself but no external damage. And no oil leak. Well now its out and this one is too damaged to go back in so do i need to get a new one or run it without a pin.

Heres the damage the previous owner got pretty lucky.

Id replace it. That alignment pin helps support a ton of weight and I wouldn't feel good relying on the bolts to keep the cover aligned. There is a way to tab the pin and Mumau Diesel can hook you up with a new pin. PM Snedge on here for the parts.

Just as a warning.. My KDP fell out and broke through the side of the case, no visual damage to any gears. 5,000 miles later the cam gear let go and took ALL the other gears with it.

A steel pin riding against an aluminum cover has no ability to support anything. Any force on that pin would just embed it into the soft aluminum. Now bolts going through a cast hole will support a lot. But honestly what weight on that cover are you talking about?

Well, it's supporting the pump and all the torque being applied to the pump to push the fuel. I think a p-pump is somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 hp parasitic.

That pin fits the alignment hole tighter than any of the bolt holes in the surrounding case. The weight of the pump plus moving internal mass of the internals is enough for me to justify the replacement. On a bone stock truck the case may not shift but would you like to be the guy buying a truck that was put together with missing parts?

Anyone here ever pulled a VE or P-7100 timing case and found the case bolts finger-tight or looser?
I have, on a BUNCH of them.
Sometimes the dowels are the last line of defense before all hell breaks loose, with the case banging around being the last warning, so to speak.

I say that because I have seen a stationary engine (well pump irrigator) that was rebuilt and loosened the timing case bolts to the point that it was rattling when the owner happened to hear it and shut it down.
I won't tell you about the Cummins Recon Bread truck P-7100 4bt I bought that actually DID break the timing case due to loosening up the bolts.

You'd think you could HEAR something like that and see the oil leaks? :banghead:

Mark.

When mine came out I didn't have enough time to wait for a new one and never put it back in. I did red loctite ever bolt and over torqued them. On a 94 I've seen a bolt go through the gears. Sheared the crack key way half way through and ended up in the oil pan.

Ya Mark is right, Just did a 12v in a f700 and a lot of the bottom bolts near the oil pan came right out.

I honestly forgot how much parasitic drag those p pumps create.

But then again I think Snedge got to you so he can sell more of his junk.
