I have a late 98 24v and I hear all this talk about these dowl pins letting go in the 12v's. Is this somthing that I need to address, fix, or even worry about? Any info is helpful....Thanks, Gerry
yes i beleive you do someone should post the engine serial # were the cutoff was but it is in the 24v trucks. there has been photos of them dropping the pin and it aint good.
ANY 94-02 no case #s were recorded. you have to open it up! Its not that hard and worth the peace of mind to know its done. Also the 4 case bolts behind the VP gear have been known to back out, so red locktite 'em while you're at it!$.02
at 217k on my 98 24v I pulled off the front cover and the pin hasnt been pushed out at all. seeing how your stock and depending on the miles on the motor will depend on if you want to pull it apart and inspect it. Pulling the front of the truck apart isnt bad but getting the pump gear out is trickey. I'm not worried about mine but thats just me. Its your call.
Just fixed my dowel pin when I installed the new cam it had moved out about 1/8". Bought the dowel pin kit from TST needed the crank seal and sealer for cover anyway, so tabbed the dowel pin while I was in there.
My 01 had the updated cover, my dads 95 droped the pin at 110K last year.
When I p-pumped mine I made a tab out of a piece of aluminum. Not really a big deal.
It has happened on a 2001 or 2002. I don't remember, but the guy posted his receipt from the Dodge dealer showing the truck year and work done. I tabbed mine just in case, but it had not moved.
Worse Case Is the dowel pin jams the cam gear holding the valves open and then piston crushes them. Total engine loss. My friend's got flung by one of the gears THROUGH the timing cover blowing out oil like a mofo. Sucks to he was on the beach in deep sand and had to run it 2nd gear redline for about 15 mins. lol

That was Fishn2deep4u who posted that, it was his Dad's 02. And I know it's happened on 01's as well.
And there is no rule of thumb as to mileage, mods, anything. I know people that have had them go with high mileage and others with low mileage, stock, not stock, didn't matter. If it wants to go, it just will. Like stated above, it can poke out the case and just make an oily mess, drop all the way through to the pan un-scathed, or get into the gears and it's new motor time. It's way too cheap and easy to fix it before it happens to chance it.
crazytexan...truck isnt stock now....i guess it wouldnt be a bad idea to pull it aprt and fix that little problem, gotta take it apart anyways to do new seals in the front cover. dang thing is leakin oil like a sieve....
