I'm looking at Dmaxes and wondering what year were good to start with a and what are the differences of certain years. Thanks Trapper

2001-2004 = LB7, Arguably the best Dmax. Has no EGR (unless in California) or VVT. Injectors are prone to failure, but GM warranties them to 200,000mi. I think the 2001s had some issues with the heads as well.

2004.5-2006 = LLY, EGR and VVT introduced, Had problems with overheating when towing heavily, but there is a fix

2006.5-2007 = LBZ, A touch different design, supposedly stronger but some motors have trouble with cracked pistons

2007.5-Present = LMM, DPF introduced, new body style

Is the fix for the LLY a home made fix or it it a parts from a dealer fix?

First you'd have to determine if you create the exact right conditions to cause an LLY to overheat. Some argue that theirs will NOT overheat at all ever. Some argue that they all can be made to overheat if you "do it right".

If you determine you need a fix...its not homemade. Nor GM. Its aftermarket. Coolmyduramax.com. I think. Its an additional radiator unit. Nice kit.

Mine doesn't overheat and the ones who bought one and say it overheats should have bought a kenworth to haul the loads.

Well ya if you over load it and push it I would expect it to get warm. I remember the yahoos in AZ towing there toys to the dunes.

I know this might be a open subject but which one responds and handles electronic tuning mods well, and which one do you guys use?

Tell us what you will be mainly using the truck for and we can better tell yo what you would need/want. All 3 duramax models have there perks and faults. Some are easy fixes and some require some work. All are good IMO. I've drove them all stock and with performance mods and personally own a LB7 and a LBZ. Just depends on what you are wanting that would determine what you should get.
