last time I saw someone use EFI live (years ago) they were using a laptop. In magazine articles and on their website I see this plug in and play thing like the Smarty, PPE etc.. How do those things work now? Do they have basic settings for the average idiot but still have the option of changing parameters yourself like the used to?
As of today, you still need a laptop hooked to the truck in order to flash a tune in. They (EFI Live) are supposed to be coming up with "stand alone" flashing and logging. Once that feature is complete, that hand held unit will then store tunes that can be flashed in via the hand held and it will also be able to log for you without a laptop hooked up.
There aren't really any "pre-set" tunes with EFI Live per se. HOWEVER, many, if not most, of the vendors who sell EFI Live offer some sort of free tune with the purchase of the EFI Live. Then there are many many many people that can get you some nice quality tunes to try out as well.
Honestly though, EFI Live probably isn't gonna be worth it if he's not gonna be tuning things himself and it sound like he's not. In that case, PPE is, IMO, the best tuner available. Tunes from mild to wild, clear DTCs, turn of DPF, raise speed limits, RPM limits, tire size speedo correction, etc. etc. etc. Only quirk is lack of shift-on-the-fly tuning. You have to be stopped and go through the whole flash process in order to switch between different tunes. Same goes for EFI Live - at least on the LBZ and LMM. LB7 and LLY have switchable tuning options but that's irrelevant for this discussion. They are supposedly working on switchable tuning for the LBZ and LMM as well and it will utilize the hand held unit plugged into the under-dash plug whereas the LB7 and LLY have switches hardwired in to switch with.
Ok, that's enough typing. :bang
