We lost 4th gear last night at the pull. Pulled the stick out and it looks like all the teeth off of it are sheared of. Anyone know where the best place to get replacement parts is and how difficult they are to work on.
Thanks

Thanks Tom I will check them out. As for the book I have some diagrams but was just looking for some real world experiance on tearing one down.

when i rebuilt mine it looked a hand gernade went off in it. the stick wouldnt go in to 1st 3rd 5th or reverse. the input shaft was cracked as well.........after i spend the better part of a week and 600 bucks in parts i stoped in a traney shop and they said the would of went through the whole thing for 900......im sure that was with stock replacmet parts not the hardend shafts but i would check around on prices if i had to do it again.

i would much rather rebuild a half a dozen eaton/road ranger trans as one of these dang 4500's little gears and syncros just arnt my thing lol

good luck with what ever you decide to do.

i had a cheap repair book and the write up off mitchel.

nv5600's are a piece of cake to rebuild.....if you have the tools, A big press that works well is important. Parts arn't that hard to get a hold of. If you choose to do it your self take lots of pics and PAY attention when disassembling it so you know where everything goes back in to...

Best of Luck

When did the parts become readily available again?

I build them fairly often and have no problems getting gears, bearings, cases, bell housings,shafts...but the stuff is expensive and most is for late model trans not the early version.

my bad, it was late and i didnt read the title, i asumed it was a 4500:doh: i have never messed with a 5600.

best of luck to ya:bang

Thanks for the replies I'm going to head over there tonight and see if I can help him tear it apart. As for pictures that is one thing that has saved my butt many times with my short term memory. I seen quad 4x4 is out of most parts and seen something about the business being for sale and a comment on the availability of parts on these being very slim. I let you know what we find out.

The factory service manual has a pretty good tear down and back together section on the 5600, as well as pretty pictures of the special tools they say are required.
