Loud rattle/chatter under load, low power?

I drove my truck last night and took my buddy for a spin, being he is a cop and he was egging me on i decided to romp on it a bit. The truck felt sluggish, and when i got in the higher rpms 3-4k its felt weak and seemed to have a loud rattle/chatter of engine noise (no more than whats normal in the lower rpms) instead of smoothing out and just screaming when the turbo lit like it did before.

My first thought is boost leak, but it still made 45psi, but i cant judge the smoke since even before it would black out the road at full spool. I will try to rig up a boost tester soon to be sure.

Anyone have any other ideas I might be overlooking maybe timing or injector issue?

I wouldn't say injectors if you haven't had an issue before. Possible lift pump failure? I would check the timing.

I'd check fuel pressure first. Maybe the overflow valve on the injection pump?

TJ, you fix those exhaust leaks yet? Maybe they are getting worse!

exhaust leaks are very minimal, heat cycles and excess soot as them just about sealed up LOL.

i guess i need to get off my rear this week and get my FP guage hooked up.

ill try to get it hooked up asap and see what the pressure is doing. it should be around 40-45 tho.

It could possibly be timing related. You dont have a fuel pressure gauge on it? I would always keep one on it at all times, I dont trust any of these electric lift pumps, they all have quirks

havent had a chance to get the FP guage hooked up, i need to go buy the line for it but have some other obligations right now. i will know more next week, until then i wont be driving the truck.

:bang:bang:bang

im gonna try something when i get home today...i forgot i have the AFE filter on it...and that filter is pretty old, and dirty. i remember seeing that it was deformed from being sucked in. ive been running the filter just around town to keep the junk out, but i forgot that i really cant wind this thing out with it on cuz it will suck it in.

doh!

Air. Very important.

Do you pull with an air cleaner in place?

just to add to this thread i hooked up my FP gauge last night finally...40psi at idle, 39psi at 3/4 throttle on the highway...doesnt drop much at all. ill try to watch it tomorrow when im pulling, if it pulls down under a load then ill up the pressure.

you may need to lower the FP psi some. That could be causing issues too
