well guys I goofed up. I took the main caps out and set them down in the exact order that I took them out. Now when I go to put them back in, I have no recollection which end of the block I started from, flywheel or timing cover side. Stupid part about this is that I never saw that each cap is numbered, with a total of 7 caps :bang. Anybody be able to help me find out which numbered cap starts at the flywheel, i.e 7 or 1? thanks in advance guys.:thankyou2:

Front of the block is #1.
Look at the lock tabs too and pair them up.
If you are not POSITIVE the block should be line bored. The caps are machined in place, and are not universal.

thanks a bunch man :rockwoot:

i'm not certain how they set a 5.9 block up, but usually you can look at the main cap with the thrust bearing and match it up with the block if you are unsure of what way to go

well guys does anybody have the torque numbers for these caps that i step torque to and then turn so many degrees? thanks in advance guys

Step 1- 60N.m or 45ft-lb
Step 2- 90N.m or 66ft-lb
Step 3- 90* clockwise

Is this what everybody building motors is going by?

Surely there is some better numbers to go by than the torque to yield (or what ever they call it) numbers.

Just asking is all....

Torque is affected by friction of the threads and contact surface of the washer head bolt.
Turning per degrees will give a better clamp

well I did torque the main caps down this morning. I can still turn the crank by hand so I'm one happy camper:thankyou2:

I understand that part of it but turning by degree would leave to much room for error, id think, per just going for a specific number and a set amount of step up tq's.

I dont know, guess i was just looking for a specific number.
