I have a friend with a 99' 2nd gen he just bought. He doesn't want to put a lot of cash in it as it's a work truck. He's put a CAI and exhaust on it so far.

Not knowing a lot about 2nd gens or what's best for them, can anyone recommend what he should do and/or which programmer would be best for it ? Something user friendly and if mechanical, best bang for the buck. He's looking for mileage with a little performance.

Thanks

Low Fuel Pressure light or FP gauge for sure Highest priority

Does he want extra power?
Then:
Edge Juice or Quad ADR without wire tapped
Fuel System of some sort
clutch or tans rebuild with any extra power.

thanks for the info dudes.

Is that Airtex a NAPA item ? and did you mention is because of it's low cost or it'd be a better pump beside another ?

I think I'll recommend the Quad since the Edge is know for running hot.

I guess the low fuel psi light wouldn't be needed as bad with a new pump ?

Low fuel light is needed even with a new pump. My LP went out in 16 months if I didnt have my LP light I would have no idea. The edge doesnt run any hotter in the second gens than the quad. AFAIK the Airtex is the newest version of the stock pump. I would reccomend a FASS DDRP (Direct Dodge Replacement Pump) if staying right at stock since it has a four year warranty.

Description says mounts in the same spot. Thats where I put the last one I installed. Nice unit.

It is designed to go into the same spot... But I had a vulcan big line kit and the relocation kit for stock lift pump I had already purchased before the Airtex... So I just moved it down there... but they sell a kit that just installs on the frame rail...

I think I got mine here (memory sucks):

bringing this back one more time. This guys is just now ready to do this

what do you guys think about a Raptor for a fuel pump ? I haven't looked into it yet but, is it easier to just do a direct replacement pump ? If that's the case.... FASS or Airtex ? What about a big line kit.... necessary ?

This guys is just looking for some better mpg and a little hp so, which would work best....keeping in mind, it's a work truck and the guy wouldn't want to be playing with programming all the time.

Quad XZT+
TS MVP
Edge Comp

I believe it's an auto but, I'm not sure. Apparently that makes a difference ?

Well, if he goes with tthe Comp box and taps the wire, which most do despite what they tell everyone, he will kill the auto quickly.

The Airtex is the easiest/ cheapest route, but if he is going to wind up hot rodding it, he may as well drop the coin on a FASS/AD/Raptor/MITUSA/ whatever...

ok thanks Tim. So what if he went with a Comp box without the wire tapped ?

The MVP seems to be a very simple ( laymen ) type box. I don't know but, it's likely a plug and play where the others aren't ?

Why not run a smarty??? Power will go up, milage will go up and it takes almost no effort to install. Plus it doubles as a code reader.

I agree but, the Smarty can be a little more intimidating to deal with for someone who's not a diesel head like most of us. Plus, there are better boxes for the older trucks. The Smarty shines ( I believe ) on the CR's

To keep it safe.....

Big Line kit w/Raptor
MVP or the Quad XZT+

10-4, it's been decided then.... going for a Raptor 100 with either a Quad XZT or Adrenaline. Don't know the power/mileage difference in the two Quad's but, if the guy wants to gauges, I guess the Adrenaline would be a good choice?

The ADR will kill the tranny like a tapped Comp Box... If he gets a comp and leaves it untapped, he will be fine.... Once that wire gets tapped he will need a tranny though. the Comp (untapped) and the MVP plug in to the same spots, so the install is about the same. Cant go wrong with either.
