I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 12 valve cummins. The other day I went to the beach everything was working fine. An hour later I got back in the truck started it up and stuff was all messed up. The speedometer, tach, odometer, tipometer, glow plugs did not work the alternator was only putting out 12 volts. I changed the alternator still putting out 12Volts. Then I hooked up my OBDII and it says that the computer fails to communicate. What do you guys think it might be? I have an idea what it might be but I wanted someone elses thoughts on it.

your glo plugs dont work because there arent any in there......

so the truck runs, but the dash doesnt work? check the connection on the back of it

If there arent any glow plugs why is there a wait to start light and i checked the back of the dash and everything is plugged in correctly

ok gotcha well that stopped working as well then because the light doesnt come on anymore

Possibly.

And the grid probably still works, just the dash light is out/not functioning, just like everything else in the dash you described. Plus the whole not responding thing...... I'd guess ecm.

its prob your tack sensor on the balancer. If it goes bad the pcm dosent read that the truck is ever running therfore the pcm dosent turn anything on. Is it a standard?

I had something similar go wrong on my 95. Thought it was the alternator but it wound up being the crank position sensor. Though it only dropped the alternator gauge and my tach. Id say pcm/ecm probably in your case.

check the wire loom that has the tack sensor wires in it mine did this because the wires were rubbing on the shutdown solenoid.
