Im kicking around a roll cage for the 01 and need to know what the specs are to meet the rules. Chromoly or DOM... Can I pin the roll bar support (to floorboard) for access when not racing.

Thanks!
Ian

Best to get a 2009 NHRA rule book for all that is required. I know it says that full bodied cars/trucks with a frame must have the roll bar attached to the frame. Also, NHRA says 10.99 and quicker for our trucks. But most tracks want you to have it if you are 11.49 and quicker. Correct me if I am wrong. I believe that is what I read today.

At 11.49 you need a roll bar.

At 9.99 you need a roll cage.

NHRA changed a the roll cage rules this year for trucks.
Steel-bodied pickup trucks (7.50 seconds and slower), roll cages are permitted with no back braces if the roll cage satisfies SFI 25.1E, 25.2, 25.4, or the roll cage consists of a four-point (door car) cage with a complete SFI 2.4B, 2.5B, 2.6, 2.7A dragster, SFI 10.2, 10.3 altered, or SFI 10.4 street roadster roll cage/driver's compartment incorporated into and attached to the four-point roll cage. An upper windshield bar is mandatory.

Non-steel-bodied pickup trucks (7.50 seconds and slower), roll cages are permitted with no back braces if the roll cage satisfies SFI 25.1E, 25.2, 25.4, or the roll cage satisfies the requirements for SFI 2.4B, 2.5B, 2.6, 2.7A dragster, SFI 10.2, 10.3 altered, or SFI 10.4 street roadster roll cage/driver's compartment. No four-point (door car) cage is required and no upper windshield bar is required.

All joints indicated as tube-to-tube joints/intersections must be fabricated by properly notching the components to fit with minimum clearance unless otherwise noted. Crushing the end of a tube to oval in lieu of properly notching/fitting the tube is not acceptable. Welding a plate to the side of one tube and butt welding the other tube to the plate surface in lieu of properly notching/fitting the tube is not acceptable.

S&W Race Cars has NHRA legal Roll Bars and Roll Cages for our trucks, in chromoly and mild steel. You cannot pin the bars. However you CAN get the approved swing out side bar option, for easier access.......$.02

If you are going to do a roll bar , only then you will have to use 1.¾ if you do a complete cage then 1 5/8 will work. I would not waste the money of CM unless 40 lbs means something to you , that is the difference between MS .119 and .083 CM one neat aspest that NHRA adopted , and was part of the Project X program, is the ability to weld a 6” x 6” plate to the rear of the cab on a four door , and attach the back bar to this plate.

Greg, would you be able to show us some pictures of how that is setup? That would be great

Thanks

Kevin
