rebuilt my transfer case a few months ago and had this left over... been forgetting to ask y'all wtf it is:

it hasn't exploded yet, and she still works fine. the shifting into 4wd can be difficult sometimes... sometimes i have to slam it into 4hi before i can get it into 4low. otherwise i haven't had any issues...

also: sorry for chitty iphone pic. that's a "P" on top and a "1/2 S" on the bottom of the washer.
 
Its a spacer for the linkage I think, probably why you have to slam it into Low range.
 
i believe its actually a canooter valve shim. haha. who cares if it still works

hah yea - clearly a crucial piece. it DOES work, though, so... there's that.

i noticed it before i had the case all back together, too, but just couldn't figure out where it wanted to be.

meh. i'll hang onto it in case someone happens to recognize it eventually. as soon as i toss the mofo, someone will tell me exactly where it belongs.
 
like 06diesel said, its probably a washer for the shift linkage. Look for slop in any of the connections where that washer might fit in
