I am rebuilding a 12v out of a 96(I think). I know I am eventually wanting to be in the 400-500hp range, but my concern right now is what are the important things to do while the motor is in the machine shop and apart? I am pretty mechanically inclined but I don't really know much about the machining side of things. If I don't tell my machinists anything he will just hone everything and get it all as close to stock as possible. So if there is anything specifically any of ya'll know that I can tell him to help me make some more power I'd appreciate it.

For that power range a stock spec bottom end will be fine and give you durability as well. A Cummins HG, new head bolts torqued to 130ft-lbs or studs if you prefer and you'll be fine. If you want to splurge on o-rings you could but for that level they aren't needed.

for that power level you can just do the afc mods, fuel plate, and a 3 or 4gsk. with a 62mm turbo, 5x12 injectors, 4gsk, and the afc mods i was in the mid 400's with my 190hp 12v

Is that someplace local? I'm having John at auto parts of Sapulpa do my machine work and assembly, but he is slow and kinda pricey but he is really thorough.

Yeah, east Tulsa... They did a pump for me, and have done several for friends.

I wouldn't ask them for a max effort pump, but if the engine is apart I'd have it balanced for the few hundred they charge.
