I have the opportunity to pickup a 99 24 valve in a trade for mine. Same truck just it's a 24 valve vs my 12 valve.

Some of you would be thinking why? Well I plan on racing ( well I do) but I'm afraid once I hit my HP goal of 500 my truck will not be streetable as I can't just touch a button and turn down the timing and the fuel.

I know with the 215 pump that's easy to hit but with the 4k
kit in my truck and 4.10 gearing it can be a bear on the street. I can't imagine what it would be like with 500hp I do have small 31 inch tires though.

Thoughts? From my views the 24 valve as
long as it has a good source of clean fuel with a aftermarket lift pump last however the 12 valve is the most reliable thing I have owned just not being able to dial back the power is a bit
of a downside.

i would stick to the 12v, just my 2cents, you could always get used to drivin it also theres more room to row with the 12v. you wont want to stop at 500 would you? why not make your 12v 6 or 700hp? if you plan on keepin it around or under 500 than mabey the 24v but if you ever think your gonna go higher i would keep the 12v. btw put a 3gsk in it you might e pleasntly surprised the drivailty is ood and you can make up the hp esewhere like bigger injectors or better plate....

keep the 12 valve or trade me for my 24 valve lol. VP44s kinda suck. Just change your gears 4.10s are only good for a work truck that pulls big loads.

Is his truck an auto or a stick? You want to race it and have said you want an auto. So I'd say if it has a auto I'd trade it. Then when you finally get up to 500hp the. Near 600hp you can decide if you still like th 24v and it you want more then at that time p pump it

I was on a boat forum a couple of years ago.

The topic of Cobra outdrives came up. I've got a great old ski boat with a 4.3 chev and a Cobra outdrive. Love the boat. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

Lots of other folks have similar boats. Love their boat.

But, most have come to face the fact that the Cobra outdrive is a finicky, troublesome POS.

Someone joined the forum asking about Cobra outdrives. A few folks said things along the lines of "as long as you adjust them, they do well." "As long as the cables are right, they are fine." "As long as your idle cut is set right, they arn't bad." You're getting the trend, right?

Well.. Someone from another part of the forum showed up, and almost verbaitum said "the only reason any of these idiots are defending the Cobra drive is because they are already stuck with theirs. Don't make the same mistake, and find a different boat."

Point of my long winded story is that sometimes it's nice to look at choices like these in a different context.

Many of us VP guys are happy enough with our trucks, and wouldn't say things against them. But, us idiots are already stuck with our trucks. When was the last time you heard of a 12v owner swapping a VP onto their truck so they could have an adjustable level 12v? Or a common rail going to a VP for horsepower. Or.. Well, I think you get the point.

As much as many of us hate to admit it: the VP is an unreliable concern that is in the backs of our minds most of the time. I fed mine great fuel pressure (18-19 FASS), always used additive, always had pleanty of fuel in the tank.. And the electronics fail. Left me stranded in one of the worse snow storms on record in Spokane, Wa. No matter how much you take care of the truck, no matter how good of fuel pressure you feed it, no matter what.. These things can still fail.

I love the adjustability of my pickup.. But I'd sacrifice that in a second to have dependability. Mine will be P-Pumped one day.

why isn't a 500 hp 12 valve streetable? Mine certainly was. And I have no doubt it will be a very streetable 600 hp when it's back on the road as a DD...

Don't a 12 valve have a valare switch(sp?), that you can flip and it will only let the afc see so much boost? Wouldn't that cut your power back if you wanted too?
As far as the vp44 goes, I think the problem with the electronics is the resistance in the wire from tapping it. Just my opinion. I'm gonna try to hit 500hp without tapping the wire and see how long it last. Yes if it goes down again I will be putting a ppump on it.
