So my truck has done this before buy lately the problem is becoming more severe and lasting longer and I'm unsure of what to even start checking, this post may be a little on the long side but I will try to be as descriptive as possible.
About 6 months ago the truck began to have a problem starting, would turn the key to the on position, everything would be fine, hit the key to bump the starter and nothing, everything just dies but the interior lights go very dim and the passenger air bag off indicator in the dash lights up very dim. Put the key in the off position and the ctm (Central Timing Module) underneath the dash begins to click loudly. I would pop the hood, and disconnect both batteries and usually bump the key a few times with the batteries disconnected. Than reconnect them and try it again. Sometimes it would fix it right up, sometimes it might take 3 or 4 attempts for the truck to not lose power, than it would start and run just fine. It hasn't done it in probably 2 months but did it twice today and once the other day.
The past 2 times today were a real pain and I was actually worried the truck wasn't going to start, but I tried a few different things to troubleshoot, here's what I noticed.
1. I started tapping on the ctm and one time the lights briefly lit up before going dim again, but it only did it once and I couldn't replicate it.
2. Disconnecting the 2 plugs in the bottom of the ctm didn't solve anything, the light on the air bag indicator was still dim while it was disconnected.
3. Once the batteries are disconnected and reconnected everything acts normal, lights and all, until you turn the key to run, sometimes it starts up normal, sometimes it dies again.
I've checked all possible fuses and changed one of the 40 amp engine fuses after an issue about 2 months ago with one. Anybody with any help or ideas is greatly appreciated as the truck is my daily driver and I hate worrying if its going to turn over or die when I hit the key. Thank you.
