need help pulling vin of the ecm with smarty

If I remember right, if you have loaded the Smarty on a truck, you can plug it into your computer and after it connects just press #9. I believe that it will show the VIN that it is locked on. Maybe have to use the > to scroll through the display. I think that is a way.
