Doing a VP swap into a 05 Ford. Have it all in and hooked up but have one code the 1689 no comm between ecm and pump module. I noticed that the pump needed its own relay so I hooked up a relay and have power to the pump but still have the 1689 and it seems like it dont want to start, have cranked on it quite a bit and not getting any fuel out of #1 inj line has a Air Dog 150 pumpin away. Grounds check out at the pump and ECM and pump has power and the BUS wires register the right volatge I believe.

So ya think he gave me an engine with a toast VP or am I missin somethin here?

1689 is Internal Injection Pump failure.

Normally this code gets set when the timing sensor in the VP go's bad .

The code is on all the time, can clear it and its right back with nothing but running the codes again.

That will just be freakin fantastic if the pump is doa, I am sure he will be pleased.

OK I'm wrong I was thinking of something else when I read your post and looked at the wrong code.

1688 is internal failure.

1689 Is NO Communication Between The ECM and VP

This code can be set if the key was turned on and connection at the VP was disconnected.

Are you using a Cummins harness for this swap?

Yes using the Dodge/Cummins harness. This is the first vp I have swapped, have done quite a few cr's so not sure if I have missed something but pretty sure I havnt. I figured out that the Ip has its own external relay and got that wired up so now it has 12v all the way to the IP and ground at the IP but still no comm.

Ok silly question .... Is the Connection connected properly?

Is the lock for the connection all the way closed?

Good question but I think it is, I had it unplugged to check the voltages and plugged it back up and slid the conector all the in till it locked the plug. I worked on it till late this eve, plan to work on it some more in the morning see if there is somethin stupid that I missed.

The lock will sometimes push in but will not pull the connector into the receptacle , check it again and see if it pull out with your hand without unlocking the lock.

i got this code when my vp died, the guy that changed it said the wire was burnt to ecm.

Went over and over it, have 12 volts at the ip and a good ground at the ip and the rest of the wires all ohm out right back to the ecm and tried a different ecm with no luck. Have 30psi (kinda high) at the ip from the AD and have cranked alot on it and can get a decent amount of flow from the injector lines further back but nothing out of #1 and little out of #2. It should have bled all the air out by now but still wont start and still has 1289 code.

So have a reman pump here tomorrow. My guess is the pump module is toast only thing I can figure.

Mine set this code off before to! Cleared it and never had a problem again!

Thats the problem with this one, it wont go away! Wich would not bother me if it would accually start and run. As I understand it if teh pump has power and a ground it should start and idle no matter what could even be unhooked from the ecm. This one wont ever start and we have cranked the hell out of it.

Through a new pump on it and hot dam it fired right up and no codes! Guess the module was toast on the pump or sumthin.
