Unfortunatly the time is very near to start throwing some cash at the tranny in my Racetruck. The truck currently has 5K governor springs, no fuel plate or AFC arm, Timing @ 16, Lockup switch. Later on I my get some 370 sticks, and a 64mm turbo, Those billet shafts sure are pricey, and I'm wanting to hear people's experiences with how much abuse the stock can shafts take.
It's a dedicated bracket racer, I'm not out to see how fast I can go, I just want consistant/reliable 13-14 second E.T.'s. The only driving it does is to and from the drag strip.
I'm thinking a full rebuild with a converter from a REPUTABLE local tranny guy, billet input, flex plate, and maybe an output.

Thoughts???

Garmon and goerend have excellent track and service records and i hear garmons customer service is top notch... ATS sure does have one hell of a warranty, though.. A customer of mine has an ATS and they built him a trans spec'd out to his truck and they told him to 'go ahead and try and break it'. They bond their own clutch discs in house and make all of their own parts. they also offer a billet t-case input with the billet output that is a bunch bigger than stock...

I too have heard great things about Garmon and Goerend, in both product and their customer service.
I appreciate everyone's input, but I already have a local builder picked out, and it's not ATS.
I'm just trying to figure out where I could save money in building this tranny, at what point to the stock 47rh intermediate shafts start breaking?

um well i have had a transmission builder say that he has never broke one, LOL. i don't know how true that is..

seriously look into getting an hts tranny, all he does is dodge trannys and also no complaints i have ever read or had. My truck is making good horsepower on 37s still working flawless for 20,000 miles so far. FTE diesel is the dealer I bought the hts from talk to wally.

Goerend does just transmission's and has been in the game for quite a while, that is one company I really like working with, Good People

If you have to leave out one shaft for money sakes, do billet input and intermediate first. The output can be swapped out by pulling the o/d section only, and there ain't much back there that it can tear up when it goes. Then of course, converter and valvebody are must, and 48re planetaries if you got the cash. You're gonna get a million different opinions, this one is mine!

goerend all the way!!! I broke 2 input shafts and 2 torque conv. and ripped 1 flexplate apart...all at seperate times....with a 160 pump no plate and no arm....finally bit the bullet and havent had any problems since and have about 30,000 miles on it...

You cant go wrong with Goerend, Garmon, or HTS.

As far as parts. If its a 47rh, I was told for 500hp you will need a Billet flex plate, triple disc converter, billet input, and the various small billet items.

I was told by all 3 builders that an intermediate isnt necessary at the HP level. They also said you can do a billet output later, because if it breaks it doesnt take out a bunch of parts like a input does.

One other thing,
I would stay away from ATS. I have read alot of problems with their transmissions.

tony, Rockin, That's what I was lookin for. Thanks!
From what most people tell me, from weakest-strongest: input, output, intermediate.

As far as ATS goes, I've bought my first, which just so happens to be my LAST tranny from them. Gotta learn the hard way sometimes.:bang
