I am doing a cam swap, but I am trying to find out how many of you have change your lifters at the same time that you did a camshaft swap.

P.S. I know that you dont have to change them with diesel, but I am used to dealing with gasser.

I was told when I bought my cam from peaks diesel to change the lifters. Havent done the swap yet but when I do I'm changeing the lifters.

my opinion is:

1. It does not hurt to change them, The CR lifters are available for roughly $100.00 and can add duration to the valve.

2. It does not hurt to not change them. Many people have the miss conception that the 5.9 cummins lifters rotate as the cam rolls around. While they do spin, the cam is not ground on a taper to induce rotation of the lifter. Also the lifters are also flat and do not have a convex shape normally used to rotate lifters in a common gas engine. Normally the combination of a convex lifter and a tapered cam lobe create a wear pattern specific to matching the lobe and lifter together. On the cummins the lack of a tapered lobe and convex lifter do not wear the lifters and cam lobes together significantly to create damage to a different camshaft and the same lifter in my opinion.

I didnt when I did mine, Also I just helped a friend. We compared old ones 80K miles approx to out of the box ones from cummins and you could not fit a cu*t hair inbetween the 2 when putting them face to face. old ones were perfectly flat.

i believe you buy a kit from cummins to change the lifters but i dont no the part number i think it costs $300 but could be wrong

Of the 6 people I know who have swapped cams not a single one of them changed lifters or have had any problems. I didn't change my lifters when I did my cam either. I say save your money.

You could save yourself alot of money by making your own 'tray' out of PVC or something simmilar.

I used to pull the lifters out and inspect them. Then depending upon their condition they may go back in. But since the improved design of the CR lifter has come onto the scene I replace all lifter with these. I have only known 1 person who had an issue with not changing out the lifters but the reason for the issues cannot be definatively established as not changing the lifters......

CR lifter are cheap and can gain you some inprovement with the new cam. Might as well swap them now and get it over with, then have to tear the motor down later to swap them out.

Bosshawg600 do you have a part number for CR lifter. What kind of improvements do you see with CR over 24v lifters

I am going to play the idiot card here add ask why a larger foot would be better than a the stock 24 valve lifter. how would it add duration? :bang
