New valve springs aren't fitting in the pocket.

Just had some 110# springs installed on my truck. I got my truck home and it was dumping what looked like oil out the back. I thought I had a head gasket failure so i sent it up for repair. Turns out the intake valve closest to the cross over tube on each cylinder is making piston contact. the springs appear to be a bit too large to sit down into the pocket properly . Anyone else seen this? Major bummer having to pull the head now.

Yes , reason being that not all casting in the Cummins heads are the same.

Recently I ran into an issue with a set 110's where the coil was binding up around where the rocker stand sits on the head. And the inside bolt boss between the rockers .

All this on a 24v.

And all 12 valve heads MUST be checked , each spring manufacture is different . So the springs don't always sit correctly. Any good machinist will check this before it leaves the shop.

That is where mine are binding. What does a shop charge to enlarge the pocket where the spring set? Or is it better to use a different spring that is designed to fit, like the Sportsman springs from F1?

Ron, the 24v springs we sell are designed for the cummins only unlike some others that have used crower part#'s in the past. On the build sheet, they have a plus or minus diameter of .005" which makes for a total of .010" swing. Cast pieces such as the head have a much greater tollerance allowed. In the last year, out of 12,000 springs sold I had one customer call with a slight clearance issue. His head was getting ported and then springs installed on the bench when he noticed a spring was slightly touching the head. He told me that he was able to touch up the casting imperfection on the head and then everything was good to go.
Seeing that you have an issue with your cylinder head's casting size, I would be more than willing to reimburse you for the springs. Please give me a call so that I can help you out with your setup, and get you back on the road.

Ron what year is your 24V head?

Does'nt matter what year it is , does'nt matter who's springs they are . It's just a simple check that needs to be preformed.
