Question:

Richwine,

I've heard more rumors about the Diesel FWD class, I heard that it was on the agenda for a upcoming March meeting to re-discuss the billet block. Is that true or is it more BS ??

Answer:

It's more BS, there are no NTPA/WPI meetings scheduled in March where this could be discussed. The only meeting coming up in March is the annual WPI shareholder's meeting. The Diesel FWD engine rules are set for the 2008 season.

Question:

Richwine,

I've heard lots of rumor about the new Diesel FWD class, I heard that it was on the agenda to discuss the out lawing of a billet block. Can I or can't I use a billet block?

Answer:

Yes, it was discussed, here is the ruling:

The Diesel FWD rules have their own rules starting on page 64 of the 2008 NTPA rulebook. which lists the rules that pertain to the diesel class. However, rule number 1 on page 64 states: All normal FWD rules apply with the following additions.

With that being said, the normal FWD rules that pertain to engines are listed on page 62:
letter D number
1. Vehicles are limited to a single automotive-type engine.
Note: Automotive engine is any engine or its replica available in a passenger car. Maximum (8) cylinders. A replica to be considered legal must accept and swing a stock crankshaft.

With that stated, the answer is yes, you can run a billet or aftermarket block in the diesel FWD class as long as it will accept and swing a OEM crankshaft for the engine that it replaces.

So who is thinking they need the billet block?

break out the check books boys......might as well just let them open the rules up like the tractors, 650 cubes and one class with a single charger and the other class open......

Roger are you saying that you have one on order? Well it looks like we know what it takes for the Dmax to keep up with the Cummins.

No those where cummins blocks. They did say they are going to be making a Duramax. to expensive for me. $9,000 - $14,000 depending on the material used.

Cummins Race Preped AG Block. $6,500.00
Billet Cummins Block $12,000.00
Breaking 3 AG blocks a year $6,500.00 X 3 = $19,500.00 NOT including pistons and misc. other parts that get torn up when you split a cylinder.

good point...but lets look at it this way, what are the odds of the billet blocks living thru a rod trying to blow thru the side of the block....I am sure there will be more than a little dent on the inside.

Just trying to look the other way also....$12,000 billet block with a hole the size of a grapefruit in its side or a $6500 block with the same hole...????

Generally an engine built to the point of requiring a Billet block, will also need billet rods forged pistons etc. so the threat of chucking a rod off are quite minimal. Definately not saying it couldn't happen though, and definately a valid point.

Good point again...not knowing current internals...but would it be safe to assume that most of the big shops that are currently running these mods already have billet rods and forged pistons? I remember talking to Curt about him chucking a rod thru the side of one of there engines last year.

Are we talking a sleeved alluminum block from KB, or DART? If we follow the drag racing sport...the engine package will be a $60K + piece by the time it's done. 4 stage dry sump with billet heads and jesel valve train. Heads set for 2 sets of injectors. We looked at running a standard 500" set up with custom heads but it doesn't resemble a 1 ton or smaller engine block.
