NV4500 Counter Shaft Question

In the process of doing the 5 speed swap. I have a 96' NV4500 that needs a new counter shaft due to a broken gear. A friend of mine has a 97+ parts transmission with the newer style one piece counter shaft. This shaft has the full length reverse gear teeth that extend all the way to the bearing stop. The counter shaft out of the 96 has the partial length reverse gear that does not extend to the end of the bearing stop. Can these shafts be interchanged?
