I need help diagnosing a noise in my friends nv4500 thats in his '96 3500. He was towing the 27k trailer thats in my avatar and he said the transmission went bang going 60 and now makes a loud ticking when the clutch is engaged. It still moves and goes through all the gears like nothing is wrong. He did put it on a dyno and it puts 37?hp at the wheels and it gets abused daily which is why its probably broken. He thinks its just an input bearing but I think its totally screwed. Whats do you guys think?

What clutch does he have in it? My truck is basically stock with a single disk in it and it started making noise when my clutch disk started to come apart. Eventually the center section tore out of the clutch disk with a much larger bang.

Prolly gonna find itty bitty pieces mixed with the big ones in it.

^I would not be surprised one bit.

He said it was a stock clutch. The thought of a disk coming apart did cross my mind but thats a lot of noise for a clutch to make. The one in there has been slipped, smoked, launched, anything you can imagine so it is possible. He is really rough with it.

You mentioned it still goes through the gears..but is 5th gear still there? My instincts tell me you'll find a hundred pieces of the 5th gear nut laying in the bottom of it. $.02. Pull the tail housing off and see. It won't take long and is relatively easy.
