My 5spd in my 2000 is grinding in 4th and now starting a lil in 5th. Its weird, it doesnt make a sound from 1st through 3rd but in 4th it starts to make a grinding noise when the turbo spools and you start to get into the engines powerband. Now 5th is just barely starting to make a very faint noise.

It has an aftermarket clutch in it, but im not sure what kind. If you try to start off in 2nd it bucks pretty good. Do yall think its the clutch or some bad bearings in the tranny or ??? I noticed too that when you have it in 4th and are just kinda lugging along at very low rpms like 1000-1200 it makes that same sound, kinda like a throw out bearing or something.

Im not really all that knowledgeable about clutches and how they work because I have never had to fool with one of them so far. I would really hate to tear apart the tranny or even replace it when its just a junk clutch or throwout bearing or ???. Any opinions???

Your probably losing the 5th gear nut.

Visit this site for the fix. Home

Would that cause the 4th gear noise too? When I bought the truck with 203k last fall, it didn't do it hardly at all if any. It keeps getting progressively worse. Thanks for the help.

I'd call Standard and talk to them. They are the only shop I will get my trannys from here on out.
I have over a year with 25,000+ miles on it beating the hell out of it and it still shifts perfect.
The Blumenthals I had before this one lasted 8 months and 4 months the truck wasnt even running.

If your nut is lose, and your gear ain't torn up yet, a tightening of the nut with a tack from a mig will fix it too. :D Wasn't my truck, but it has held ever since. Just a cheap fix if you want to save cash.....however the next person that tears it apart will cuss you. :hehe:

Ive heard about the 5th gear nut backing off. But why would that cause it to "grind" in 4th? Its pretty much just in 4th, 5th is so minor that you can just barely hear a noise.

I have the exact problem you do... i have been through 2 transmissions and had the first one rebuilt like 6 times... They call that noise gear rolling i believe.. mine dont do it untill 4th also when it comes into powerband. Then last night my new midwest transmission went out while pulling my pulling tractor home. Im disapointed

i feel that fast coolers are mandatory if you tow anything

tony suggested royal purple and i am having great luck with it

mig welded a nut on once - bout 6 months later twisted the shaft in two

guess it comes down to money and how badly you dont want ur truck to let u down

imo your truck should never be at 1200 (much less a grand) in 4th gear

I was told by Standard Trans and gear that any higher horsepower trucks should NOT do any full throttle blasts under 1600rpm in 3rd,4th,and5th.
The torque under 1600rpms is what tears thing up.

Yep thats exactly what it is doing. 5th gear seems fine though. I did top it off with one extra quart of fluid though. That made it shift smoother and doesn't make as much noise until it gets warmed up. Once it gets warmed up the noise gets louder. Im done foolin with it, i think i will just drive it till it craps out on me.

This is why I am doing a Auto conversion.
47RH FULL BILLET

have you guys tried the fast coolers?

adds couple of qts to capacity and keeps the internals cooler

that and keeping the rpm's up seem to be working for me
