I've been through 7 of these. they are VERY simple. If you can change your oil, you can pretty much handle anything inside your NV4500 if you pay attention to detail. depending on whats wrong with it you might not even have to drop it out of the truck. 5th gear for instance is just behind the tail shaft. However I'd drop it anyhow and run through the whole thing. double nut 5th, change out 3rd synchro for sure, and check your end play. If you arent already, I will HIGHLY reccomend running Synchro Mesh fluid. DO NOT EVER RUN ROYAL PURPLE IN YOUR 5-SPEED! It is too slick and will glaze over your synchronizers. Its bad. take my word on it. Input shaft is easy to replace. the only thing really challenging is getting all the gears depressed from the man shaft.

one more thing I will add, look for used parts, they have been tested and have not broke yet. new parts are not worn to match opposing gears right off the bat and I have a tendency to break them in about 2 months.
best of luck bud.

I have the 3rd gear synchro gone and would also like to rebuild mine, as well as fix the 5th gear nut problem and a bigger input shaft. Me and a few buddys have rebuilt an allison in a 07 lbz and a 48re in a 06 dodge. I know nothing about manual transmission really (only installed one SB DD in a dodge), is it as easy as you say? i mean really? It could save me a few bucks if i did my own labor on it :thankyou2:

We'll, If you really have gotten into an auto, you will be amazed how simple these 5-speeds are. Very basic, no oil coolers, no electronic shift mechanisms, just old school mechanics. There are only 3 shafts in it. the input shaft which is very small and only has one bearing on it. the Main shaft which holds all of your gears and syncro's, and the biggest is the cluster gear. its on the bottom most part of the inside of the case. Thats about it.

I rebuilt my 1st nv4500 when I was 17 with a video camera. I video'd every piece I took out/off, and used the tape as a reference. Just pay attention to detail.

I've been through 7 yes.

1: low on fluid stripped gears on input shaft on cruise control.
2: Double clutched in 5th, sheered off gears in 5th gr transfer gear.
3: 3rd gear synchro swap and double nutted 5th, lost 5th.
4: speed shifted to 3rd gr. snapped main shaft 2" solid steel.
5: rolling boosted launch in 5th, hit bump in road at WOT, snapped 5th gear.
6: Popped clutch in 2nd at 3200 rpms, broke input shaft in half.
7: Speed shifting, jumped a shift gate, tranny in 4th shifter in neutral. tore up 3rd and 4th gear shift forks.

Thats about it on transmission problems. Clutch is another story.
But I'm only 21 now and have rebuilt all of these transmissions myself. the total cost for all 7 together is $2000. thats pretty cheap if you think about it.

good luck on your build. Save my number if you have a question in the future (512) 844-5747

P.S. DHD and DLD transfer cases are built about the same as the 5-speeds. they are easy too.

Don't feel bad cody I'm currently on my 6th now in two yrs... First time 5th gear nut came loose while passin sum slower turds but just enuf to let gears come back halfway back so wasn't meshed fully with bottom gear.. tore all teeth off. Upgraded clutch and billit input shaft while tore it apart. next time tore all teeth off third gear then again out of third Next time tore all teeth off 5th gear now twisted countershaft off and broke a bunch off teeth off both the fifth gears and cracked the case at same time.. Waitin on countershaft to put all back together... again But, like u said VERY easy to work on. Just lay everything out in order and put back together in reverse way... Saves a bunch of money doin it urself!!!!

Doesn't sound like it could be too bad, I dont see how anything could be as tough as an allison. Ive just heard different stories about rebuilding a manual compared to an auto. Thanks for all the info and I will save your number. I will probly do everything in the spring time

ya man, tough luck on the poor rebuild jobs. I'm the only one that works on my truck, if not I'm watching every move. I dont like un-answered questions. I just wanna know what EXACTLY is done to it.
Like I said previously, I'm gonna tackle my engine this spring for the 1st time. Gonna do a compression test this Sat. Sounds funny, but I'm hoping for very poor results. if not, something else is wrong if you catch my drift...
