I know this question has been asked a million times, but every form if read no one has a real answer. Witch way is better O-ringing Head Or Fire ringing head. Im not going to us my truck all the time but on friday nights, weekends and some events I would like to drive my truck there and around and :rockwoot:. but any ways id like to have it set around 70 to 80 psi what should i do and mabey other's that are interested.

O-rings should work fine for your app. Fire rings don't like a ton of heat and cool cycles from daily driving.

I beleive most professionals will say that 0-rings are good for up to 80psi....maybe that's what the studs them selfs are good for im not sure I could be getting that quote mixed up.

I had Joe Hellman fire ring my head. I reaserched and I concluded this was the best option. I do a lot of everything with my truck. I do not have much run time on it but Joe told me he has done many including a hot shot guy who has lots of miles under his belt and never had trouble from any others he's done. That sold it for me. Great guy 2

Just like I have said in all of the other post about this,,, dont do it, unless you want more problems down the road. If your going to have the head off get it checked to see if its true and machine if its not. Then get a new MLS Gasket and some ARP 625 studs torque them down PROPERLY and do the retorques PROPERLY and you will have no problems with 80 psi.

there now you have three differant answers, hope this helps

LOL yea, Thank you all and yes i would think the mls would be another option. but what seems to be the problem is that you want to do it rite the first time (like you said). so you dont have to do it agian. and every one has there own openions about them all. i have heard that fire rings at the least will last 40K, and that o-ringing you head will hold about 70-80. and my only knowledge of MLS is on the CR. i just need the magic 8 ball because in my case it seem's like i realy have to make a desion the will make or break me .???? i just don't want to play rush and rulet down the line if you know what i mean.

My current set up is 950hp at 90 psi with the o-ringed head. I had fire rings in my last set up and will never do them again. Hope that helps you decide.

i'm running fire ring's with a grove cut in the head and in the block with 625 studs and so far no problems and it's a daily driver only got 2000km on it so far and have hit 80+psi alot of times . good luck picking the right way to do it I fliped a coil to pick the way i went LOL

Properly done O-ring will hold 100+ psi and you shouldnt have any problems, another easy route would be to use a MLS, thats how i have my DD, but if its a full on race vehicle then i would do a O-ring

I would go with O rings. I am going to go the O ring route for simple fact that you set use a factory head gasket, with fire ring it requires a special gasket.

@ 80+ psi I have had both types hold it but I have had some issues with o rings not holding . Fire Rings I have not had an issue with yet. And is nice not having to retorque so much.$.02

I have run over 90lbs on an MLS gasket with 12mm studs, on a powerstroke no less. When the surface finish is correct, and the head/deck are true, an MLS gasket makes about the best choice for a true daily driver IMO.

Secondly, can someone give a nice, detailed explanation of a "Fire Ring" and an "O-Ring", and just exactly how they differ?

Charles,

Fire ring - Compression ring removed from gasket. Groove machined in block and/or head to fit stand alone mild steel ring.

O-ring - groove machined in head or block with steel wire inserted into goove leaving a protrusion of .007 - .010. The protrusion of that "ring" crushes into the compression ring on the stock gasket.

So who sells the modified "firering" headgasket kits?

Haisley and Hellman?

Who else?

Are some proving more reliable than others?

lol i might have to do the coin trick like big orange said because there is good and bad with both it seems. has any one heard of runing and Mls with o-ringings on 12 v? is it worth it? and what is the diffrence on tourqeing of o rings and fire ring's big diffrence?

O-ringed head with 625's is what I did. Once the block is cut for fire rings, there's no going back. We've had to replace a couple of blocks (In customer trucks) due to fire rings leaking and the deck being flame cut.

I would rather run a stock gasket with 625's than ruin a block by fire ringing it. A stock gasket with 625's would probably work just as good as if you o-ringed. $.02

Most just cut groves in the head for fire ringing unless it's an all out competition engine and get both the block and head cut.
