Bear with me please. Ive been out of the loop for a while, just now getting back into this. Im building up my truck with an ultimate goal of 800 on fuel/water/alcohol. Trying to get this done using a big single. Now im wanting to do something that will reduce HG failure. Ive read that o-ring is better for street than fire ring. Whats the diference? How much should i expect to pay for the machining and what type of HG do i then use? Plus are there any draw backs to this procedure? Thanks in advance for yalls input.

I have read many times o-ringing is better for a daily driver but can't give info as to why.If this is for your CR headstuds and a stock MLS will hold but if you are gonna go the o-ring route I'm pretty sure you have to run a modified 12V gasket. I just had a 24V head decked and o-ringed for $275

Here is an explanation I wrote up on O-Ring Vs Fire Ring:
Fire Ring versus O Ring Cylinder Head Dodge Cummins Diesel

I feel pretty neutral on either. O-Ringing is usually cheaper in the long run and I believe you are within the limitations at 800HP, but, you do have to buy a modified gasket to o-ring a commonrail, so the price gap is smaller than with a 12 or 24 valve.

You'll have to have your head surfaced before you do either. This will cost anywhere from $90-$150 most likely.
To have the rings cut for fire ring, you are probably talking from $300-$500 depending on the shop.
O-Rings would probably be similarly priced.

Let me know if I can help you with your project. We can have all the machine work done here if you cannot find someone nearby to do it, but shipping is pretty pricey.

My CR is o-ringed and WAS (see my carnage thread) holding right at 800 just fine...Even with Stock head bolts....I recently purchased ARP 625's though..

I just use a self modified 24V stock thickness gasket....
